The Beavecreek police and Beavercreek School system are working together to get a new federal policing grant. The grant is part of the COPS 2009 Secure Our Schools (SOS) Program. It offers a 50% match up to $500,000 of federal dollars.

The city did not have the matching funds available, but Beavercreek Police Chief Turner contacted Beavercreek Superintendant Denny Morrison to see if the school could put up the funds, which is allowed by the federal government. Morrison expressed interest and reportedly commented that besides being a great collaborative effort, it would also help stretch the dollars of the bond issue that was passed last November.

The schools already had some money set aside from the bond issue to upgrade security cameras and can provide a total of $720,000 toward the federal match. The City will administer the grant for the schools and they will provide the required 50% matching funds. The money will be used to upgrade cameras, add more cameras and connect the school’s camera system to the Beavercreek Police Department.

Miami Valley Hospital has entered into a 10-year, $1.3 million partnership with Beavercreek City Schools as part of what the hospital refers to as its “continuing strategy to build closer relationships with communities it serves.”

Through the agreement, Beavercreek student athletes and students participating in extracurricular activities will receive sports medicine and athletic training services, as well as prevention, wellness and health education services, through hospital trainers and physicians.

Beavercreek City Schools and Miami Valley Hospital officials dedicated Miami Valley Hospital Stadium at 7:45 p.m. today, immediately prior to the start of Beavercreek High School’s varsity boys’ basketball game against Centerville. Beavercreek High School’s football and track complex will be known as Frank Zink Field at Miami Valley Hospital Stadium.

Dennis Morrison, superintendent, Beavercreek City Schools, said that the stadium renovation project will provide significant improvements.

“Through this agreement, which is focused exclusively on our athletic facilities, we will expand and update the Beavercreek High School stadium. Improvements will include synthetic turf for Frank Zink Field – a name in which we continue to take pride in Beavercreek — and an eight-lane track. The new turf will provide a quality playing surface for football, soccer and band events. The addition of the eight-lane track will allow us to host larger invitational track meets,” he said.

Beavercreek City Schools hopes to make the stadium improvements in time for the Fall 2008 athletic season.

Mary Boosalis, president and chief executive officer, Miami Valley Hospital, said, “Our agreement with Beavercreek Schools will help create a healthier community, increase access to health education services and expand Miami Valley Hospital’s presence.

“As in other communities where we’ve formed partnerships, our agreement with Beavercreek represents a new way of offering and making readily available the excellent services provided by Miami Valley Hospital and our physician partners, further integrating quality healthcare into the everyday lives of students and their families,” she said.

During 2007, Miami Valley Hospital announced agreements with Springboro Community Schools and Sugarcreek Local Schools. Good Samaritan Hospital in Dayton and Atrium Medical Center in Warren County, also part of Premier Health Partners, have also announced agreements with school districts in communities they serve.

“Miami Valley Hospital has a long-term presence in the Beavercreek community through our Premier HealthNet physician offices. More recently, we have opened a Premier ExpressCare in Beavercreek. We are happy to extend our presence for the benefit of Beavercreek City Schools student athletes and other students involved in extracurricular activities,” Boosalis said.

Located at the Beavercreek Kroger at 3195 Dayton-Xenia Road, Premier ExpressCare serves individuals age three and up for minor and common ailments, including select immunizations and screenings.

Wright State Grad Stories Part 2: A Grandmother’s Challenge

We are inspired and challenged by many around us to become better people. Those who inspire us to action can come from anywhere. In this case a grandmother’s challenge to her grandson meant quite a bit of work on her part and an achievement worth recognition.

There are many grandmothers who attend their grandchildren’s college graduation. But it’s not that often that she’s in cap and gown marching in the commencement ceremony alongside. That was the case this year when 70-year-old Ethel Samuels and her 27-year-old grandson, Gregory Hamilton, marched down the isle at Wright State’s 40th commencement ceremony.

Ethel recalls accompanying her grandson to Wright State when he was considering enrolling. Sensing his apprehension, she looked at him and laid down a challenge. “If you decide to apply for admission, I will too.” she said. Hamilton looked at his grandmother, realized she was serious, and soon they had both enrolled in the Organizational Leadership program.

The team embarked on a four year journey together at Wright State. “We have taken all our classes together,” Greg said. “It has been a pure joy. I seem to learn more when I take classes with my grandmother because we studied together and bounced ideas off one another.”

“Each day as we attended classes together, I realized that I had just begun to enjoy yet another wonderful stage in my life,” said Ethel, truly a lifelong learner. “It was always a pleasure working with Greg on projects. He is such a seriously motivated student.”

Greg says he enjoyed their studies together as well, with just one exception.“The only thing I didn’t like was that no matter how hard I studied, my grandmother would always score higher than me!” he says.

After graduation, Hamilton hopes work in pharmaceutical sales or retail, with the eventual goal of working in bank management. As for Ethel Samuels, she says she plans to spend more time with her five children, 15 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. “I hope to share my love of learning with all of them.” Who knows, maybe she’ll earn a few more degrees with them along the way.

Wright State Grad Stories Part 1: The Mothers of Twins

You never know what common bonds will connect you with others. This is one of those stories about two people at very different points in life who formed a friendship from a common bond that transcends most… both are the proud mothers of twins.

Wright State student Jasmine Malik was already tired that cold morning four years ago as she waited for the shuttle to take her from Mini University up the hill to campus. Mini University is the on-campus day care provided for students. Dressing and feeding her twin sons and dropping them off at child care in time to get to an 8 a.m. class was always a struggle after working the night shift.

Even so, when the car pulled up next to her at the bus stop and the driver offered her a ride, Malik declined the stranger. “No thank you, I don’t know you,” she said. Michele Wheatly, dean of the College of Science and Mathematics, herself a mother of twins, persisted. “It’s OK. I work on campus. I’m the dean of a college.” Thus began a life-altering relationship that would last throughout Malik’s four years at Wright State as a psychology major in the College of Science and Mathematics.

“I was a freshman, a single mother with twin babies and it was the first time I had lived on my own. My time management was bad,” said Malik who had been 15, and a sophomore at Trotwood-Madison High School, when her sons were born. “It was a struggle but there was no other way but to keep going. Dr. Wheatly talked to me about her twins and gave me helpful advice about being a mother.”

As a working mother with a significant administrative responsibility, Michele Wheatly is used to being asked, “How do you do it all?” “My answer is a simple one,” she said. “I am inspired by all of our students who are themselves parents and have to deal with work/life balance with fewer resources and support systems.”

When Malik was put on academic probation and was struggling financially, Wheatly and her assistant dean, Joyce Howes, helped straighten out her financial situation and advised her to take fewer than the 17 credit hours a quarter she had signed up for.

“The most important thing to them was helping me get into the classes I needed. My grades were horrible and I couldn’t afford school, but everything slowly got better,” said Malik, who had finished high school with a 3.4 GPA and a Paul Laurence Dunbar Scholarship. “Living in The Village, the apartments for families, was their idea. There was a washer and dryer in the building and I could get to the child care center easily on the shuttle.”

Malik’s six-year-old sons, Johnathon and Christopher, were in the audience when Malik gets her bachelor’s degree in psychology at Wright State’s annual spring commencement ceremony. Malik plans to spend some time with her boys before starting work on a master’s degree in social work.

“I think Wright State caters to the needs of individuals, whether you are disabled, have children, or are an older student coming back to college,” said Malik. “I don’t know what I would have done if I hadn’t gone to Wright State.”
