The long awaited episode of Extreme Makeover Home Edition featuring the Terpenning family from Beavercreek premiered last night on ABC. The episode was filmed in late July and early August in Beavercreek, Ohio.

The family along with many others attended a viewing party at the Hilton Garden Inn in Beavercreek. ABC Channel 22 also ran an half hour special before the episode aired and another after the 11:00 pm news cast featuring a behind-the-scenes look at the event.

Move That Bus! A large crowd showed up for the big reveal in August when Extreme Makeover Home Edition visited the Terpenning family in Beavercreek, Ohio. Photo © Craig Barhorst

The episode highlighted the family’s struggles with having two members with disabilities living in a house that was not very handicap accessible. But as the episode made clear, being disabled doesn’t mean giving up on dreams or accomplishments. James Terpenning, confined to a wheelchair, is a gold medal winner, plays on a wheelchair basketball team and also has a list of goals to accomplish throughout his life. One of those goals was to go scuba diving and that goal was fulfilled in the episode when he got to go scuba diving in Disney World.

The description for the episode read as follows: “The team rebuilds the home of a family whose father is a wheelchair sports champion and mentor to disabled Iraq War veterans; Kellie Pickler is the celebrity volunteer.”

The new home designed and built by Extreme Makover and Coventry Fine Homes was designed specifically for those with disabilities. The doorways and hallways are wider. Bathrooms, kitchen and other rooms have enough space for wheel chairs and the entire plan was created with the disabled in mind.

Jim works as an Information Technology expert at WPAFB. He was nominated for the show by the base’s three-star general among others. Jim has no legs and uses a wheelchair. As a child he suffered from polio in Vietnam and was one of the last children rescued before the country fell. After arriving in this country he was dopted by the Terpenning family. Later, his brother who suffers from cerebral palsy, was also adopted by the family. Jim’s brother now lives with Jim, his wife and 4 children in Beavercreek.

Even though the team lost in the playoffs, all agreed that the final regular season game on Saturday, April 5 was one of the most exciting of the season. The team, down by one goal late in the third period, scored a goal with only 11.4 seconds left on the clock, tying the game and sending it into “sudden death” overtime.

The Charlie Daniels Band will be the headliner at this year’s fourth annual “Freedom’s Call” Tattoo, held Friday, June 27, on the grounds of the National Museum of the United States Air Force.

Freedom’s Call Tattoo is an adaption of a time-honored military tradition that features ceremonial music, military aircraft flyovers, airpower demonstrations, static displays and evening fireworks.

This year’s event will also include an enlistment ceremony of new Air Force recruits from the Dayton area, recognition of local family support organizations, and medal presentations to active and retired Air Force servicemen and women. The event is held on the grounds adjacent to the National Museum of the United States Air Force. Gates open at 4:30 p.m., and the ceremony will begin at 8 p.m.. The event is free and open to the public.

“‘In just four years, Freedom’s Call has established itself as an impressive, off-the-charts educational and patriotic event that has become a must-do summer outing for people of all ages and backgrounds,” said Col. Colleen Ryan, 88th Air Base Wing commander. “It’s an event that presents a two-fold opportunity: It joins together the base and surrounding communities to honor the men and women serving in our armed forces, and it enables citizens first-hand observation of the military capability those men and women use to fight to preserve our freedom.

Last year parking became a problem as thousands showed up for the event. This year, the parking problem has been addressed according to the colonel who sadi that over 3,000 new parking spaces are being added, provided by neighboring Wright State University. The Greater Dayton Regional Transit Authority is also on board, and will provide park-and-ride services from the university.

“It’s a family-oriented event,” Col. Ryan said. “There are so many activities for kids and adults, including the debut of an information and technology exhibit of military capabilities both currently employed and developed here at Wright-Patterson. We change the venue a little bit from year to year, so patrons don’t know exactly what to expect.”

In addition to the display, there will be game tents for kids, sponsor booths and local bands. Signaling the Tattoo’ s official start at 8 p.m. will be a line-up of active-inventory aircraft, led by the F-22 Raptor, which is tentatively scheduled, followed by a quick-moving multi-faceted recognition ceremony, accompanied by music provided by the U.S. Air Force Band of Flight. The Charlie Daniels Band will take the stage at 9 p.m. and play for nearly an hour before the evening concludes at 10 p.m. with one of the most dynamic fireworks displays in southwest Ohio.

Many of the best-loved characters from the Dr. Seuss books will come to life this March when the Beavercreek Community Theatre presents Seussical, The Musical March 7 – 16, 8 pm on Fridays and Saturdays and 3 pm on Sundays.

Under the direction of John Falkenbach of Dayton, the BCT cast brings the Seuss characters to the mysterious Jungle of Nool where it takes the mischievous Cat in the Hat (John Detty of Fairborn) and a thinker like JoJo (Anna Schlegel of Beavercreek) along with the gentle Horton the Elephant (Mark Reuter of Kettering), the shy Gertrude McFuzz (Dana Kragick of Beavercreek) and brash Mayzie LaBird (Elaine Stoughton of Xenia) and a gaggle of other Seuss characters to bring harmony to this chaotic land.

The Beavercreek Community Theater says it’s a witty, whimsical musical that weaves together some of Dr. Seuss’ most famous stories and characters in a creative and thought-provoking way.

The cast includes Beavercreek residents Emily Bochenek, Sally Cumberland, Cameron Cumberland, Kaitlyn Houchins, Carlos Machicao, Alexis Rountree, Lisa Rountree, and Anna Schlegel.

It also includes Megan Ealey of Fairborn, Amanda Koslow of Springboro, Jennie Scheihing of Yellow Springs, and Grayson Throckmorton of Riverside along with Dayton residents Kelsey Manes, Sarah Parsons and Kurtis Shannon.

Along with directing, Falkenbach is also covering the tasks of set designer and builder, costumer, choreographer and lighting designer.

Bruce Green of Beavercreek is the producer of the show and cast members, Sally Cumberland and Kragick, are also serving as the musical directors.

Mike Duffey, spokesman for The Greene, says “Just working up the nerve to run in this weather deserves respect. Last year, we had 146 people in 20 degree weather, many of whom came and registered the day of the event despite the temperature.”

The “Go Red For Women” event this year features a 2 mile walk or run on the streets of The Greene. The event will be held Saturday, Feb 23rd at 9:00 am. Registration is required. At 10:00 am a “Kids Fun Run” will also begin following the 9:00 am kickoff of the main 2 mile run and walk.

The Greene says that after completing the race, participants and others are invited to visit the Health Fair at Urban Active Fitness inside The Greene. Mike Duffey says this is an event for the entire family. Awards will be presented at the Health Fair and “Greene Money” will be awarded to the top three participants for each age group and gender category.

All entrants are also eligible for door prizes courtesy of The Greene. Medals will be awarded in age groups and all proceeds benefit the American Heart Association.

The entry fee is $15 if paid before Feb 16, 2008 by registering early via The Greene’s events calendar at www.thegreene.com, and $20 after that date. Registration includes t-shirt, as quantities last, and refreshments.
