Huawei CFO's lawyers argue against U.S. extradition request

Canada arrested Meng, the daughter of Huawei's founder, on December 1.

In response, Canada has maintained it is following the rule of law in Meng's case, as set out by its extradition treaty with the United States.

Scott Fenton, one of Meng's lawyers, said the defence is seeking further disclosure related to the "unlawful detention, search, interrogation and delayed arrest of Ms. Meng". She is accused of violating USA sanctions against Iran and defrauding banks by hiding such activities through a Huawei subsidiary. The company reiterated that the US -ordered arrest was "an unlawful abuse of process - one guided by political considerations and tactics".

On Dec. 10, China detained Canadian nationals Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavor, and has accused them of working together to "steal state secrets".

In March, Canada said it will allow the United States extradition case against Ms Meng to move forward, though a date has not yet been set for the extradition hearings.

Howes said the allegations against Meng are untrue and said the business activities of Meng were conducted openly and transparently with the full knowledge of banking officials.

She has been free on bail and is living in one of her two multimillion-dollar homes in Vancouver while wearing an electronic tracking device and being monitored by a security company.

Meng will next appear in court on September 23, when her defense will make more applications for more disclosure. Her lawyers filed a civil claim against Canada's authorities, border agency and police for "severe breaches" of her civil rights earlier this yr.

The politically explosive proceeding could take years, and history shows that if Canada follows the letter of its law, Meng will probably be extradited.

Huawei Canada's vice president of media affairs is expected to make a brief statement at the courthouse following the appearance.

It has also rallied the support of a dozen countries, including Britain, France, Germany and the USA, as well as the EU, NATO and the G7, in its diplomatic feud with China.

The United States has since accused Meng of, among other things, deceiving four banks to enable Huawei to evade U.S. sanctions against Iran.

The case has set off a diplomatic furor, with China's embassy calling it a "political persecution".

The allegations against Meng are based on violations of US sanctions against Iran, but Canada does not impose sanctions on financial services in relation to Iran, and because of this, the allegation she faces is not a crime in Canada, he said. Therefore, they argue, the extradition request does not satisfy the "double criminality" requirement, because she has not broken Canadian law.

Two Canadians are believed to were detained in retaliation for Ms Meng's arrest. China is also blocking imports of the agricultural product canola from Canada.

Tensions between China and Canada have escalated since Meng's arrest.

Meng is now free under private guard on $7.4 million bail. Justice Heather J. Holmes said she was not keen to defer applications for too long, as the court has an obligation to "move expeditiously", but the defense had made a strong case for needing more time.
