U.S. to Impose Higher Tariffs on Chinese Exports

Trump administration officials believe that China's own nationalists have pushed back on some of the terms agreed by its trade negotiators, arguing that they would be humiliating to China and its leader, Xi Jinping.

After Trump made his Twitter announcement, Tom Orlik, chief economist at Bloomberg, told the BBC in an interview that the move was likely a negotiation tactic. His threat increases pressure on a deal that Trump said has been going "too slowly".

"The 10% will go up to 25% on Friday", he said.

"That may not be forever if the talks don't work out", he said.

Trump asserted that so far the tariffs he slapped on Chinese goods "are partially responsible" for the robust United States economy, which in the first quarter grew at an annual rate of 3.2 percent.

Despite the happy talk from Trump and others in recent days, the U.S. has become frustrated with China's backpedalling on some of its earlier commitments, including on the crucial matter of technology transfer, two people familiar with the situation said.

"The Tariffs paid to the US have had little impact on product cost, mostly borne by China".

The United States first imposed tariffs on $50 billion worth of Chinese goods as a punitive measure.

According to National Economic Council Director Larry Kudlow, President Trump is issuing a warning to China before Wednesday's meetings, the Washington Post reported.

Chinese officials were scheduled to meet their US counterparts in Washington on Wednesday after meeting in Beijing last week for a round that Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin described as "productive". The Chinese regime quickly retaliated with tariffs on roughly $34 billion worth of USA goods, mostly agricultural products.

But in December, on the sidelines of the G-20 summit, Trump and Xi agreed to a 90-day truce, in which Beijing promised to import more USA agriculture and energy products, and crack down on illegal fentanyl coming into the United States.

It is understood that key sticking points include how to police any deal, and whether existing tariffs will be removed or stay in place.

So far, the trade dispute has cost the Chinese economy. "China has got to end its unfair, nonreciprocal trading system".

Trump launched the trade war in July, after an investigation by his trade officials concluded that China routinely abuses the intellectual-property rights of American companies. A few weeks later, China agreed to open its market to US beef, cooked chicken, and natural gas in what Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross called a "herculean accomplishment".
