Defence secretary Gavin Williamson strongly denies Huawei leak following sacking

Gavin Williamson has been sacked as Defence Secretary

The UK's newly ousted Defence Secretary Gavin Williamson (picture) hit back at Prime Minister (PM) Theresa May after she fired him for revealing secret discussions about Huawei Technologies Co Ltd's role in Britain.

A Downing Street source said May had to move against a cabinet leaks culture that was threatening to overwhelm her premiership, and expressed the hope it would kill leaks from the NSC "stone dead".

However, Mrs May noted the internal investigation into the leak had provided "compelling evidence" he was responsible for the unauthorised disclosure, including his 11-minute conversation with the Telegraph reporter on the day of the council meeting.

He was sacked following an inquiry into the leak, which led to reports in the Daily Telegraph on plans to allow Chinese company Huawei to help build the UK's 5G network.

And they would only make that decision if the evidence is presented to them.

She added: "That is why I commissioned the cabinet secretary to establish an investigation into the unprecedented leak from the NSC meeting last week, and why I expected everyone connected to it - ministers and officials alike - to comply with it fully". They also made the absolutely brilliant P30 Pro.

The Prime Minister's decision to give Huawei limited access to Britain's 5G network has put renewed strain on the relationship with Washington.

Labour's deputy leader, Tom Watson, said the government was trying to shut down legitimate questions about possible criminal activity by a minister before a police inquiry had been launched.

Scotland Yard said it was not carrying out an inquiry, although it would look into any information "that would suggest criminal offences have been committed".

In a letter announcing his sacking, May said the leak was "an extremely serious matter, and a deeply disappointing one".

The Prime Minister was warned that Mr Williamson - who continues to protest his innocence - will seek revenge for the way he was unceremoniously booted out of Government.

The newspaper cited Lib Dem MPs Jo Swinson, Sir Vince Cable and Sir Ed Davey as saying in the letter that the investigation is needed "to ascertain whether the actions of Mr. Williamson constitute a breach of the Official Secrets Act, given that the leak originated from the National Security Council and related to highly-sensitive information". She has said she will step down for the next stage of Brexit negotiations (at a yet to determined time) and a heated battle is on to take over, including among some of those who attended the NSC meeting.

During a meeting with Williamson this week, May told the defense secretary that she had "compelling evidence" he was the person who fed the information to the publication.

Mrs May has said she considers the matter closed.

In firing Williamson on Wednesday, May said an investigation had left no other credible explanation for the leak except that Williamson was responsible.

The former head of the Central Intelligence Agency will meet Mrs May and Jeremy Hunt, the Foreign Secretary, in London next Wednesday.
