WikiLeaks Founder Julian Assange Arrested by British Police

Assange claims he is going to be thrown out of the Embassy

What just happened? Julian Assange, the WikiLeaks founder who has spent the last seven years in hiding at Ecuador's London embassy, has been arrested after the South American country withdrew his asylum claim.

Assange has spent nearly seven years at the embassy after seeking refuge there to avoid extradition to Sweden.

So, with that offer of asylum officially withdrawn, Ecuador worked with the Metropolitan Police to allow them to enter the embassy and arrest Assange.

Ecuadorian President Lenin Moreno said the decision to remove Assange's asylum was made over "repeated violations" to worldwide conventions and "daily life protocols".

Ecuador's president Lenin Moreno said it withdrew Mr Assange's asylum after his repeated violations to worldwide conventions.

It followed similar comments by Mr Moreno that he had "repeatedly violated" the terms of his asylum.

Moreno said most recently, WikiLeaks released Vatican documents, and that before and after the release key members of the organization visited Assange, pointing to his continued relationship with a group "interfering in internal affairs of other states".

WikiLeaks said Ecuador had illegally terminated Assange's political asylum in violation of global law.

Julian Assange, the founder of WikiLeaks, was taken into custody Thursday, seven years after he was wanted by European authorities.

Footage shot by Ruptly, a video news agency, showed a frantic-looking Assange, with a large white beard, being carried down the embassy steps by several men into a police van.

The 47-year-old Australian was due to appear in court later on Thursday.

Moreno said he had asked Britain to guarantee Assange would not be extradited to a country where he could face torture or the death penalty.

He remained in the embassy due to concerns that if he left the USA may also seek to extradite him on espionage charges.

WikiLeaks has accused "powerful actors", including the Central Intelligence Agency, of a "sophisticated" effort to dehumanize Julian Assange.

"For six years and 10 months, the Ecuadorian people have protected the human rights of Mr Assange and have provided for his everyday needs at the facilities of our Embassy in London". I would like to thank Ecuador for its cooperation & @MetPoliceUK for its professionalism.

He could face an extradition request from the USA over WikiLeaks' involvement in publishing sensitive U.S. military documents from Chelsea Manning in 2010, and Democratic National Committee emails during the 2016 presidential elections.

Home Secretary Sajid Javid then confirmed that Assange was in custody and "rightly facing justice".
