Boeing responds to Ethiopian Airlines 737 Max crash findings

Acting administrator of the Federal Aviation Administration Daniel Elwell and Chairman of the National Transportation Safety Board Robert Sumwalt testify during a Senate Commerce Subcommittee

In a statement on Thursday, Ethiopian Airlines responded to the findings of the preliminary report, saying it "clearly showed" that the pilots of the flight "followed the Boeing recommended and FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) approved emergency procedures to handle the most hard emergency situation created on the airplane".

In its statement, shared on Twitter, the airlines said that according to the preliminary report, the pilots commanding flight ET302 followed emergency procedures recommended by Boeing and the Federal Aviation Authority (FAA) to handle the situation.

"Since repetitive uncommanded aircraft nose down conditions are noticed ... it is recommend that the aircraft control system shall be reviewed by the manufacturer", Ms Moges said.

Pilots "repeatedly" followed procedures recommended by Boeing before the crash, according to the first official report into the disaster.

Following the plane crash in Indonesia in October a year ago, appeals were made by the victims' families to ground the Boeing aircraft owing to its faulty anti-stall system.

Boeing Co., Ethiopian Airlines and aircraft-sensor maker Rosemount Aerospace Inc. were sued in the USA for alleged negligence in connection with a plane crash last month that killed 157 people and intensified concern about the safety of 737 Max passenger jets.

The March 10 incident became the second instance that the Boeing 737 MAX jet was involved in a crash within a span of five months. Boeing's technical experts continue to assist in this investigation and company-wide teams are working to address lessons from the Lion Air Flight 610 accident in October. The FAA has said it will review the software before allowing the Max to fly again. CBC News has obtained a copy of the 737 MAX flight crew manual - and what's not in it raises troubling questions about the manufacturer's lack of disclosure.

"We remain confident in the fundamental safety of the 737 MAX", CEO Dennis Muilenburg said in a statement.

The head of Ethiopian Airlines Tewolde, GebreMariam, said he was proud of the efforts of the pilots in trying to stop their jet from crashing. One source told ABC News they manually attempted to bring the nose of the plane back up by using the trim wheel.

But the FAA, which faced harsh questioning last week at a congressional hearing regarding its oversight of Boeing, said it expected the plane maker to submit the proposed fix "over the coming weeks" after it undertakes additional work.

A Seattle Times story last month detailed shortcomings in the safety analysis conducted on MCAS during certification of the 737 MAX.

The preliminary report from Indonesian investigators found that a faulty sensor on the aircraft wrongly triggered MCAS without the pilots' knowledge.

In a statement Thursday, Ethiopian Airlines said its pilots followed Boeing instructions. Thursday's revelations raise questions about repeated assertions by Boeing and USA regulators that pilots could regain control in some emergencies by following steps that include turning off an anti-stall system designed specifically for the Max, known by its acronym, MCAS.

Worldwide, several governments have issued orders to ground this series of jets, leading to flight cancellations and rescheduling, causing havoc in the aviation sector of some countries.
