New Zealand vs Bangladesh Test cancelled after Christchurch attack

The team in action at a past match

The third cricket test between the Black Caps and Bangladesh in Christchurch has been called off after a shooting at a nearby mosque this afternoon.

Bangladesh team members who were on the bus near the mosque reportedly disembarked and quickly made their way to Hagley Oval, where the match was to have taken place Saturday.

Armed forces have entered Deyell Crescent, south of the Botanic Gardens and Al Noor Mosque, AP reported. Video shows several Bangladeshi players and media escaping the scene.

Performance analyst Shrinivas Chandrasekeran, also on Twitter, said "Just escaped active shooters". 'They were at the ground and just started running.

A New Zealand Cricket spokesman confirmed the organization is "in constant communication" with the Bangladesh team.

White said he had spoken to the liaison officer with the Bangladesh team and the players were "shocked". They have also promised to offer support to all those within the teams affected by this situation.

"As a country we'll have to look at [security of visiting teams]". It seemed to be a safe haven. "What has happened here is an extraordinary and unprecedented act of violence". "It is not only, say, Bangladesh or India or Pakistan at the high risk", he said.

The Federation of International Cricketers' Associations (FICA), a body which acts on behalf of players, said in a statement: "FICA, on behalf of its members and cricketers around the world, sends its prayers and sympathies to the people of Christchurch following today's horrendous attacks".

Mass shootings at Christchurch mosques

"I heard a big sound of the gun".

"Only two of the players [Liton Das and Nayeem Hasan, as well as spin-bowling coach Sunil Joshi] had stayed back in the hotel, and rest of the squad had gone there". One person is in custody, however Police believe there may be other offenders. "I don't know whether my brother is safe or not".

Had they arrived a few minutes earlier they would have been inside the mosque, where at least 30 people were killed by a gunman with an automatic rifle. "They are in awful and severe mental (distress), they're not feeling well".

"They were on the bus, which was just pulling up to the mosque when the shooting begun", he told Reuters via Twitter.

"We watched the whole thing from the bus, like a movie, people bleeding as they came out of the mosque".

"I spoke to one of them shortly after (the incident)", Mario Villavarayen, the team's strength and conditioning coach told New Zealand Herald.

Team manager Khaled Mashud said they were counting their blessings after they narrowly avoided being in the Deans Avenue mosque for their Friday prayer session. They are now in lockdown at their team hotel. Many of those who will have been directly affected by this shooting may be migrants to New Zealand.

Four people were arrested on Friday after two gunmen opened fire at two mosques in New Zealand's Christchurch city, with the police saying that there were "multiple fatalities".
