New Zealand PM says 'gun laws will change' after mosque shooting

New Zealand mosque shooting: At least 49 killed after gunmen open fire

Police Commissioner Mike Bush declined to comment on whether it was an act of terrorism but said the situation was unprecedented in New Zealand.

Former NSW personal trainer Brenton Harrison Tarrant, 28, appeared in a Christchurch court on Saturday where he was formally charged with one count of murder.

Police first responded to reports of shots fired in central Christchurch around 1:40 p.m. local time on Friday.

"Today we stand with the people of Christchurch, New Zealand".

"Many of those affected may be migrants to New Zealand".

The European Commission said the "senseless act of brutality on innocent people in their place of worship could not be more opposite to the values and the culture of peace and unity that the European Union shares with New Zealand". Two improvised explosive devices were located in a vehicle, according to investigators.

"An expert testified before parliament in 2016 that it was only a matter of time, before a mass shooting occurred in NZ", he said.

Christchurch resident Jo Paul brought her children to the memorial. The attacker has not been named, but Australia's prime minister said he was an Australian citizen and described him as an "extremist right-wing violent terrorist".

Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison earlier confirmed that one of the four people taken into custody is Australian.

Currently, New Zealand restricts the purchase of "military-style semi-automatic weapons" to those 18 or older.

The prime minister noted that it appeared the attacks appeared to have been well planned.

"To think that a mosque, a place of peace, tranquility, reflection, and meditation becomes a place where people are targeted simply due to their faith is horrifying and we can't let that happen in Canada or anywhere around the world", Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada Ahmed Hussen told the crowd at the vigil.

Reflecting on the recent mass shootings that took place at two mosques in New Zealand, Daryle Lamont Jenkins, executive director of the anti-fascist organization One People's Project, told Sputnik that the USA right wing "needs to be held accountable" for the attack. And in the video he livestreamed of his shooting, no remorse can be seen or heard.

He said his desire for violence grew when he arrived in France, where he became enraged by the sight of immigrants in the cities and towns he visited.

Jordan's King Abdullah II tweeted that "the heinous massacre against Muslims praying in peace in New Zealand is an appalling terrorist crime".

The attack has shocked New Zealanders, who are used to seeing around 50 murders a year in the entire country of 4.8 million and pride themselves on living in a secure and welcoming place.

Christchurch was the home of these victims.

Those new amendments included greater oversight over the acquisition of ammunition, restricting sales to only firearms license holders and requiring permits for people to order guns or ammunition by mail, updating and adding more information including photographs to individuals'gun licenses, and requiring secure storage for guns.
