The Thai princess who would be prime minister

Thai Raksa Chart party leader Preechapol Pongpanich holds up application of candidate for Prime Minister Thailand's Princess Ubolratana Rajakanya Sirivadhana Varnavadi at the election commission office in Bangkok Thailand on Feb 8 2019

Princess Ubolratana Mahidol, older sister of Thailand's King Maha Vajiralongkorn, is now a candidate for prime minister - a move that marks a startling break with Thai royalty's long-observed practice of staying out of politics.

But a Friday night palace statement read on all Thai television networks called the princess's candidacy "extremely inappropriate" and against the "nation's traditions, customs and culture".

The main opponent of the princess, if her nomination were to stand, would be Prayuth, who also announced his candidacy on Friday, as the candidate for a new pro-military party, set up by his loyalists.

Thai Raksa Chart party selected Friday, Feb. 8, 2019, the princess as its nominee to serve as the next prime minister, upending tradition that the royal palace plays no public role in politics and upsetting all predictions about what may happen in the March election.

He is a former army chief who led the 2014 military coup that ousted the country's last elected government, led by Yingluck Shinawatra.

His Majesty the King tried to soften the blow Friday by acknowledging that his 67-year-old sister had already relinquished her formal royal titles, and he praised her for conducting charity work and otherwise earning the love of her family and the Thai people.

She relinquished her royal titles in the 70s when she married an American.

"Who would dare criticise a royal prime minister?" said Puangthong Pawakapan, professor of political science at Chulalongkorn University. The army eventually ousted him from the prime minister's office in a 2006 coup. As the Bangkok Post reports, "the pro-military People's Reform Party asked the Election Commission to rule if the Thai Raksa Chart Party violated the election law" by making the nomination.

Thaksin's well-funded political machine returned to power twice since and is seen as the key element in arranging for Ubolratana's selection because she cast her lot with a Thaksin-affiliated party.

Ubolratana's candidacy is still not completely secure just yet - the Thai Election Commission needs to endorse her candidacy, and we have yet to get a sense of how this move fits in with other dynamics within the royal family including her relationship with her brother, including indications of a potential roadblock by Vajiralongkorn on constitutional grounds.

In 2016, Thais voted to approve a new constitution created by the country's military leaders, which was designed to perpetuate military influence and block Mr Thaksin's allies from winning another election.

"From my point of view, I think she understands Thai politics".

Thai Princess Ubolratana's unprecedented attempt to become the country's next prime minister was abruptly nixed Saturday after her party agreed to comply with a command from the king opposing the plan.

The simmering conflict between those two sides has resulted in street protests, military coups, and violent clashes for nearly 15 years.

When King Maha Vajiralongkorn, who has lacked the same level of devotion most Thais had for his father, ascended to the throne, conventional wisdom saw him as tightening his grip on power by allying himself closely with the military.

Thai Raksa Chart Party chief Preechapol brushed aside questions about Thaksin.

But the opposition from Princess Ubolratana's younger brother, a constitutional monarch, is likely to lead to the Election Commission disqualifying her.

Ubolratana, a mathematics and biochemistry graduate from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, has a reputation for being more accessible to commoners than the rest of the royal family. Her full name is Ubolratana Rajakanya Sirivadhana Barnavadi.

She was seen at the 2018 World Cup in Russian Federation smiling with Thaksin and Yingluck and has over the junta years given a number of coded nods on social media in favour of the Shinawatras. They later divorced, and she moved back permanently to Thailand in 2001. She is referred to as "Tunkramom Ying", which means "Daughter to the Queen Regent", and is treated by officials as a member of the royal family.
