The North Magnetic Pole Has Changed And It Could Cause Major Issues

Earth's magnetic north pole is wandering about 55 kilometres a year

However, the magnetic north pole is moving faster than normal resulting in a new out of cycle release for the WMM.

Since 1831, the north magnetic has been moving across the Canadian Arctic towards Russian Federation, which is unlike the geographic north pole, which is fixed, NOAA reported.

The wandering point, which long jiggled above Canada and barely moved, is now moving 55 kilometers (34 miles) a year, scientists said. The point is moving approximately 55km every year and in 2017 it moved past the worldwide date line, the point of longitude in the middle of the Pacific Ocean that is the crossing point between 11.59pm on one day and 12am on the next.

The movement forced scientists to update the World Magnetic Model (WMM), which is used by North Atlantic Treaty Organisation and militaries around the world, for its location.

In the 189 years since it was first measured in the Canadian Arctic, it has moved some 2,300 kilometers toward Siberia, and its speed jumped from about 15 kilometers per year to 55 kilometers per year since 2000.

Earth's magnetic North Pole has been shifting towards Russian Federation so quickly scientists have been forced to publish an update on its actual location a year early. There is a hot liquid ocean of iron and nickel in the planet's core where the motion generates an electric field, said University of Maryland geophysicist Daniel Lathrop.

Scientists say the Earth's internal processes might cause these erratic changes, CNN noted.

This, however, is just a theory, but all we have to say is please don't take our Google Maps away from us.

The US military depends on where magnetic north is for navigation and parachute drops, while Nasa, the Federal Aviation Administration and US Forest Service also use it.

Scientists have now released an update to the WMM to account for the unexpected movement of the northern magnetic pole.

Scientists on Monday released an emergency update to the World Magnetic Model, which cellphone GPS systems and military navigators use to orient themselves. In the past century, the direction in which our compasses steadfastly points has moved northward, driven by the Earth's churning liquid outer core.

The magnetic North is the point at which the planet's magnetic field points vertically down.

Earth's magnetic field is now getting weaker, and scientists believe the poles could "flip" at some point in the future. "If one 'plays the tape backwards, ' the record shows Earth's magnetic field strengthening, weakening, and often changing polarity".

The Earth's magnetic behaviour is far more complex than that of a simple bar magnet.

The field also protects the Earth from deadly solar radiation, though there's no concern that function will be affected by the shifts, Fiori said.

They can be found in the navigation systems of ships and airplanes as well as geological applications - such as drilling and mining.

'All of these examples need the WMM to provide your proper orientation'.
