Brexit: Corbyn tells May to rule out no deal at meeting

Britain's Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt arrives in Downing Street London Britain

A key member of PM Theresa May's government acknowledged on Thursday that Britain's exit from the European Union may have to be delayed if negotiations on a divorce deal drag on.

"If we ended up approving a deal in the days before March 29, then we might need some extra time to pass critical legislation", Hunt told BBC radio. The only thing parliament has indicated majority support for is the prevention of "no-deal", yet this is the default position on March 29th unless something can be agreed.

"This Government is unique - it was found to be in contempt of Parliament, it suffered this biggest-ever defeat by a government with its Brexit plan".

"The [UK] negotiators have not been able to explain them to us and that's not their fault, it's because they don't exist".

May's spokesman said she backed an amendment that called for the removal of a controversial "backstop" arrangement in her deal to keep open the border with Ireland after Brexit, in favor of "alternative arrangements to avoid a hard border".

"Brexit is the clear and present danger and, with thousands of jobs on the line, we urge all parties to do whatever it takes to save us from "no deal"," Hawes said.

May now has two weeks to convince the European Union to replace the backstop with her "alternative arrangements", which she so far has failed to reveal despite repeated calls to do so.

"It is therefore crucial that Parliament and the Government do everything they possibly can to reach agreement in the coming weeks".

It would see the United Kingdom following all EU rules and regulations, including the customs union and single market, to the end of 2021 or until a new trade deal with the EU can be put into effect.

"The vote was decisive and I listened", May said on Tuesday.

May must report back to the House of Commons by February 13, either with a reworked version of the deal or with a statement on what she plans to do next. "We're asking for money for areas that have not had their fair share in the past", he said.

Jeremy Corbyn says he told Theresa May "don't bring no deal back to Parliament" in their long-awaited face-to-face meeting on Brexit.

Meanwhile, Mrs Leadsom told MPs that "in light of the significant decisions taken by the House this week" she was giving the House notice that "there are now no plans to bring forward a motion to agree dates for the February recess".

The Commons had been expected to rise at the end of business on February 14 and return on February 25.

Tuesday night's votes included the passing of an amendment tabled by Sir Graham Brady calling for Prime Minister Theresa May to go back to the European Union to require "alternative arrangements" to the backstop.

As well as her discussions with European leaders, Mrs May also focused on winning over domestic critics as she began a new charm offensive on Monday by hosting Tory MPs for drinks in Downing Street. He called on Mrs May to "face the reality that no-deal is not an option".

Germany's foreign minister Heiko Maas said the British government "must now say quickly what it wants, because time is running out".

"The fact that recess won't be taking place shows you that we are taking all available steps to make sure that 29 March is our exit date", a government spokesman said.

Campaign figures believe that the most likely route to a new referendum remains May's deal being rejected for a second time next month after the prime minister's renegotiation attempts inevitably fail.
