Apple revokes Google enterprise developer certificate

Apple punishes Google for data collection app

Facebook relies on Apple's program to run internal apps on iOS devices, from simple things like bus schedules to communication tools like Workplace and Messenger.

Analysis After briefly punishing Facebook and Google for violating the rules of its enterprise developer program, Apple has relented. Recently, several instances have been reported about companies using Apple's enterprise program to distribute more and more apps to consumers. iOS developer Alex Fajkowski has discovered that Amazon, DoorDash and Sonos have handed out beta versions of their app to non-employees.

Apple has always been one of the most valued tech brands in the world but most probably see it as a smaller player when compared to the likes of Google, Microsoft, or even Facebook. Their functionality has since been restored, alongside the company's enterprise certs.

The program is intended for enterprise customers to test and deploy iOS apps among employees without using the iOS App Store. On the other hand, if Apple were true to its word that it would act on "any developer using their enterprise certificates to distribute apps to consumers", it may find a long line of chickens (or monkeys) standing in the line. The two companies are in discussions about how to solve this.

While Apple has a program for testing apps called TestFlight, Facebook skipped this by asking participants to sideload the "Research" app on their phones. These apps are only allowed by employees of the owners of the app and Facebook went around this policy and was distributing the tracking app to customers who were being paid $20 (Should've been more but that's a story for another day).

Facebook app for iOS users has been updated to version 206.0, and while it brings under the hood improvements for other iPhone users, it also introduces native higher resolution support.

In an earlier statement, Facebook had been keen to shut down reports that the company had been accused of "spying" on teenagers through the use of the application in question.

This situation is very similar to recent news about a Facebook app geared towards teens which paid them $20 to track almost everything they do on their iOS devices. And, unlike Facebook - which stripped its name off Research VPN following the similarly snoopy Onavo VPN getting pushed out of the App Store - Google's clear about its involvement. Would that have happened-ever-for a smaller company?

They're likely to cause a certain amount of chaos at Google, too.

Google is not just a competitor - it pays Apple billions of dollars each year to be the default search engine provider for the Safari web browser on iPhones, iPads and Mac desktop computers.
