Venezuela: Guaidó Seeks Support from Russia, China as Maduro Gov't Remains Defiant

Foreign Secretary call with Juan Guaido: 30 January 2019

Guaido added that Russian Federation and China would benefit from a government change as Venezuela's main foreign creditors. The cargo plane was still at the airport in Caracas, according to the website Flightradar24. US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin told reporters that by blocking PDVSA's assets, the United States was taking care of this company in the interests of the people of Venezuela and also protecting its own market.

Some analysts saw in the flights echoes of what has transpired in the final days of other authoritarian rulers around the globe.

Maduro also says the opposition strategy of trying to push him from office is illegal and led by hawks in the Trump administration, such as the recently appointed USA special envoy to Venezuela, Elliott Abrams, a veteran diplomat involved in the armed interventions in Central America in the 1980s.

Before the campaign-style rally, Pence met with some exiled Venezuelans, including a man who said he spent years in prison where he was tortured, and a doctor who brandished a poster-sized photo of what he said was an emaciated child suffering from food shortages in the oil-rich country.

"The presumption is that it is gold".

"Do you want a puppet of the gringos to govern Venezuela?" "They will not return to govern Venezuela or come to take our oil!"

"Chávez was endlessly traveling to Russia", said Maxim Trudolyubov, editor of the Russia File blog at the Wilson Center's Kennan Institute, a think tank in Washington.

Mr Pence said the United States was prepared to work with the opposition-run National Assembly to deliver humanitarian aid to Venezuela.

Following the USA -led campaign against Venezuela's democratically elected President Nicolas Maduro, the European Parliament Thursday called on the EU member states to recognize Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaido as the interim president. Maduro's socialist policies have plunged the nation into poverty and despair.

"Everything that is happening in Venezuela is Venezuela's internal affair". "It is time to end the Maduro regime".

The bloc has agreed to lead an worldwide crisis group of 10 to 12 countries and is expected to hold its first meeting next week in Montevideo, the diplomats said.

"It's not just the United States doing this", Guaido said.

As Venezuela has sunk into economic and political crisis that has brought mass emigration and hyperinflation, the European Union imposed an arms embargo and sanctions on officials to decry what it views as rights violations and the rupture of democracy.

Any transactions with Petroleos de Venezuela SA, or any entity in which it has a controlling stake, involving USA citizens or passing through the country's financial system must be wound down by April 28, the Treasury said. The company also has $6.5 billion in loans to the country to be repaid in oil.

In his statement, Guaido said his government was aiming to "guarantee the biggest transparency and control" for PDVSA, adding that it was preparing to "start the process to name the boards of directors of PDVSA and Citgo to allow the recovery of our industry that is going now through a dark moment".
