Fact-checking Trump's border speech and DACA offer

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell quickly praised the deal and said he was ready to bring the measure to the floor, but it's already clear that Democrats are uninterested.

Some of the 800,000 federal employees who have been going unpaid since 22 December are in increasingly dire straits as the shutdown enters its fifth week.

"If the bill is filibustered on Tuesday. people will not get paid", he said.

The President delivered a short speech from the White House in an attempt to shift the political dynamics of the longest government shutdown in history after polls showed that he was getting most of the blame.

She said the State Department told her "the president outing" the original trip made the scene on the ground in Afghanistan "more unsafe because it's a signal to the bad actors that we're coming".

Still, TSA reports that, on Saturday, 99.9 percent of passengers waited less than 30 minutes and 93.8 percent waited less than 15 minutes.

Mr. Trump and congressional Democrats are now deadlocked over funding for a border wall.

Trump said that there would be "no big push" to remove the 11 million people in the country illegally, before warning: "'but be careful, Nancy!"

President Donald Trump is expected to announce later Saturday that he is open to trading protections for young immigrants in exchange for money for his long-promised border wall. But in a separate interview on CBS' "Face the Nation", Pence declined to elaborate on whether Trump's tweet meant that he was leaving the door open to amnesty in the future. "Amnesty will be used only on a much bigger deal, whether on immigration or something else".

Moments after President Trump put forward his newest proposal to end the partial government shutdown, White House officials began pushing the offer as a "common sense compromise" and Democratic lawmakers doubled down on their rejection of the plan-a rejection that began even before the president made his highly anticipated remarks Saturday.

"This is a common-sense compromise both parties should embrace", Trump said.

Congressman Ben Ray Lujan also released a statement and said, "What the American people were expecting to see today was immediate action to open the federal government".

But during a recent trip to the U.S. -Mexico border, Trump hinted at the possibility, saying he would consider working on the wall and DACA "simultaneously".

Prior to the address and responding to reports on Trump's decision to offer temporary relief to undocumented migrants residing in the U.S. in exchange for wall funding, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said that the move to reopen the government was a "non-starter".

The rumors come after Trump killed the #DACA and #TPS programs, putting millions of once protected immigrants in danger, after Trump killed the #DreamAct.

After days of bitter clashes between Trump and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, it was unclear if the twin developments represented serious steps toward resolving the nasty partisan fight or posturing.

Trump campaigned on the promise of a southern border wall and insisted that Mexico would pay for it, and ultimately insisted that the latest government appropriation include $5.7 billion funding for the barrier.

The offer also includes extending protections for refugees who came to the US because of war or disaster.

Trump's proposal calls for $5.7 billion for border wall funding, $800 million in "urgent humanitarian assistance" and $805 million for drug detection technology and port security.

Democrats assailed Trump's new offer as cynical, noting that it was the president who - by moving earlier to end the DACA program protecting 700,000 young immigrants and to expel some 300,000 others in a separate programme - had placed in jeopardy many of those for whom he now offers temporary protection.

James Carafano, a vice president of the conservative Heritage Foundation said Saturday the president should "be applauded" for trying to end the shutdown, before ripping into his latest plan toward doing so. She isn't saying whether she'd vote for it.

He explained that the Democrats' reluctance to strike a deal and put an end to the ongoing U.S. government shutdown stems from the influence of "extreme left-wing" politicians who are afraid of giving in to Donald Trump.
