Tata Motor's Jaguar Land Rover to cut another 4,500 jobs worldwide

Thousands of workers at Jaguar Land Rover in Merseyside are waiting to learn how they will be affected after the auto maker today announced it was cutting 4,500 jobs.

Meanwhile, Ford signalled "significant" cuts among its 50,000-strong European workforce under plans to make it more competitive and make its business more sustainable.

The 4,500 cuts come in addition to 1,500 employees laid off past year, and represent 10 percent of the company's global workforce.

There were reports past year that thousands of jobs could be axed as part of a £2.5 billion savings plan amid falling sales in China and a drop in demand for diesel cars, but the figure was not confirmed.

The company has been making losses following a massive drop in demand in China, its biggest market, and concerns on diesel vehicles.

Jaguar also announced further investment in electrification, with electric drive units to be built at its factory in Wolverhampton and a new battery assembly centre at Hams Hall in Birmingham.

"Decisive action will help deliver resilient long-term growth as Jaguar Land Rover implements cost and profit improvements", said CEO Ralf Speth in a written statement.

JLR has sites in Halewood on Merseyside and Solihull, Castle Bromwich and Wolverhampton in the West Midlands.

"The economic slowdown in China along with ongoing trade tensions is continuing to influence consumer confidence", said Jaguar Land Rover Chief Commercial Officer Felix Brautigam.

The cuts are in response to the challenges of declining sales in China, the dramatic reduction in the diesel market in the United Kingdom and overseas as well as the uncertainty brought about by Brexit.

They are also concerned that the company is not permanently reducing its United Kingdom production capacity in the face of what could prove to be short-term headwinds.

A Ford spokesman said the vehicle maker now assumes that any Brexit deal would keep tariff-free trade between Britain and Europe.

The company started consultations with unions, with details of job cuts not expected until later in the year, although staff based at Warley in Essex will move to Dunton.

Ninety percent of its vehicles are diesel-powered, although it has been investing in new electric and hybrid vehicles. "It is important that government, employers and unions work together to ensure supply chains are not harmed, and that Brexit does not cost us any more jobs". In the same year, JLR also announced to invest in its Solihull plant to support the introduction of the next generation Range Rover and Range Rover Sport.

The workforce would be reduced through a "Voluntary Redundancy Programme", the company said. It's already moved all Land Rover Discovery production overseas to eastern Europe. Last year, it said Land Rover Discovery production would move to Slovakia out of the United Kingdom to make room for future battery-electric vehicles.

It has hired 4,000 workers in China since 2014.

"Given the difficulties that they're going through.to add further costs and further disruption from a no-deal Brexit, it's clear why they've been so clear that this would be against their interests", said business minister Greg Clark.
