Meghan's patronages: Duchess of Sussex's four new causes revealed

Royal Wedding

She has now passed on the responsibility to the Duchess of Sussex.

"Over the previous year, Her Royal Highness has held meetings and conducted private visits with each of these organisations", Kensington Palace said.

Within a couple of hours of the announcement by Kensington Palace the duchess visited one of the organisations, Smart Works, which helps vulnerable women gain employment.

"As well as a double major in theatre and worldwide relations from Northwestern University, which is renowned for its drama programme, Her Royal Highness volunteered at a performing arts after school programme for children in underprivileged school districts in Los Angeles".

The Duchess of Sussex will assume two royal patronages long held by Queen Elizabeth II herself. She will also be working with the Association of Commonwealth Universities, the only accredited organisation representing higher education in the Commonwealth.

Arriving at the women's charity Thursday morning, the mum-to-be who is thought to be seven or eight months pregnant definitely had a glow about her and left her make-up minimal and her hair in a signature low bun.

As the announcement of Meghan's new patronage was made, it was revealed that the Duchess of Sussex had visited the organisation several times over the previous year, working with numerous women approaching the organisation for support and seeing them go on to succeed.

On the furry friends side, Markle becomes the royal patron of The Mayhew, an organization dedicated to animal welfare for pets.

Joanna Newman, chief executive and secretary general of the ACU, said she was "thrilled" Meghan had become their new patron. "I very much look forward to working closely with Her Royal Highness in the years to come".

Meghan Markle will be stepping up her royal duties in 2019 as today Kensington Palace revealed she will be given her first royal patronages.

Mayhew is an animal welfare charity which helps cats and dogs through community initiatives and veterinary care.

Markle, 37, visited Smart Works Thursday, where she reportedly aided women in need picking out clothes for work and job interviews, as well as helping with career coaching.

"Members of the royal family can use their patronages to shape their legacy as members of the royal family", Murphy told ABC News.
