Manafort filing reveals alleged campaign communications with Russian operative

His sentencing is now set for March, but the judge who will sentence him planned to first resolve whether he did indeed breach his plea agreement with prosecutors.

The specifics of the Mueller allegations were not previously known publicly, having been blacked out in a heavily redacted December 7 filing by the Russian Federation collusion prosecutor's team.

While some of the redacted information was not a big deal, there was one section of the failed redaction that appears to shed light on Mueller's understanding of Manafort's roll in the 2016 presidential election.

The court filing does not reveal when that meeting took place, but an unredacted section that follows highlights that it is "not uncommon, however, for a witnesses to have only a vague recollection about events that occured years prior" and that "these occurrences happened during a period when Mr. Manafort was managing a US presidential campaign and had countless meetings, email communications, and other interactions with many different individuals, and traveled frequently".

The allegation relates to Manafort's association with Konstantin Kilimnik, a Russian political consultant who worked for Manafort on campaigns in eastern Europe. (See Doc. 460 at 6).

The US believes he is connected to Russian intelligence, but Mr Kilimnik, who is not in US custody, has denied those ties.

Manafort has always been in the crosshairs of the Mueller team, having been charged early on in the Russian Federation investigation.

In the filing Manafort's lawyers said they would not seek an evidentiary hearing to contest Mueller's allegations of lying, arguing that such factual matters could be addressed in a pre-sentencing report.

Kevin Downing and Thomas Zehnle, defense attorneys for former Donald Trump campaign manager Paul Manafort, leave U.S. District Court after a status hearing in Washington, Dec. 11, 2018.

Manafort's attorneys disputed the characterization Manafort authorized the unnamed person to communicate with Trump on his behalf, according to the redacted details of the filing, The Hill reported.

Manafort's attorneys did not respond to a request for comment Tuesday about the filing error, though they corrected it in the court's official record. Manafort, who has been in solitary confinement, has suffered for several months from severe gout, according to the filing.

The allegation is the first time prosecutors have accused Trump's chief campaign aide of sharing information related to the election with his Russian contacts.

Prosecutors have also accused Manafort of lying about his contacts with Trump administration officials, which defense lawyers deny.

"Mr. Manafort provided complete and truthful information to the best of his ability", Manafort's lawyers wrote.

Despite the deadline, the public record of Manafort's criminal case in DC District Court has not been updated since mid-December.

Manafort agreed to cooperate with Mueller when he admitted to two conspiracy counts in Washington on September 14, a month after jurors convicted him in Virginia of tax and bank fraud. Sentencing in that case - which could result in a lengthy prison term - is scheduled for next month. Manafort has also forfeited tens of millions of dollars in property.

The defense lawyers say Mueller's team has indicated they will not pursue additional charges against Manafort.
