U.S. Commerce secretary

Trade talks between China and the United States are proceeding as planned with the start of the talks in the Chinese capital also buoyed investor sentiment with Asian stock markets registering gains

In public statements aides like Wilbur Ross, the commerce secretary, and Peter Navarro, a White House trade adviser, have played down the impact of the trade wars on markets, the US economy and companies.

US Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross signalled in a CNBC interview on Monday that there was a "very good chance" of reaching an agreement.

The meetings are the start of what economists say are likely to be lengthy, contentious negotiations over USA complaints that Beijing's technology ambitions violate its trade obligations. The U.S.is pushing for greater market access in China (which has been accused of making U.S. companies share tech secrets in order to do business there) and it wants China to buy more of its products.

U.S. Undersecretary for Trade and Foreign Agricultural Affairs Ted McKinney, center, who is part of U.S. trade delegation leaves from a hotel for a second day of meetings with Chinese officials in Beijing, China, Jan. 8, 2019.

USA and Chinese officials met Monday in the Commerce Ministry in Beijing to begin their two-day trade negotiations.

China's Foreign Ministry Spokesperson, Lu Kang, addressed the encounter during a press briefing later on Monday, stating that Beijing had "lodged stern representations" with Washington.

Data last week showed manufacturing has slowed in both China and the United States, though the U.S. Labor Department on Friday reported a surge in new jobs in December along with higher wages.

The operation came as Chinese and U.S. officials kicked off talks in Beijing to find a solution to a bitter trade war that prompted the two sides to impose tariffs previous year on more than $300 billion in total two-way trade.

"It is imperative for the two sides to create enabling environment for the talks at this time", he said.

Optimistic investors are placing their bets on the stock market once again, boosted by the United States' and China's latest attempt to resolve their trade war.

"As for whether the Chinese economy is good or not, I have already explained this".

One Chinese official reportedly described the negotiations as "constructive".

Since March, the USA has slapped tariffs on $250 billion worth of Chinese goods, while China has placed a series of retaliatory tariffs on US goods totaling $110 billion. "China's development has ample tenacity and huge potential", Lu said.

Officials have given scant details on concessions that China might be willing to make to meet US demands, some of which would require structural reforms unpalatable for Chinese leaders. "We have firm confidence in the strong long-term fundamentals of the Chinese economy".

But a USA government official told AFP on condition of anonymity that "the trade talks have continued today (Wednesday)", without providing more information. Preliminary discussions were "a little more optimistic than usual", White House economic adviser Larry Kudlow told Bloomberg TV Friday. Before they bring Lighthizer to the table, Prasad said the U.S.is trying to see exactly what sort of offer China is willing to put on the table first.
