Canada says 13 citizens held in China since Huawei CFO arrest

China insists detained Canadians ‘without a doubt’ broke security laws

US prosecutors have accused Meng of misleading banks about transactions linked to Iran, putting the banks at risk of violating sanctions. - A second Canadian who had gone missing in China is under investigation on suspicion of "engaging in activities that harm China's national security", state media reported on December 13.

The US State Department issued a warning to Americans thinking of travelling to China that they could face "coercive" exit bans employed by Beijing as the countries continue to face off over trade, the Financial Times reports.

Former Canadian diplomat Michael Kovrig and businessman Michael Spavor were among those detained by China as relations between the two countries worsened.

Perhaps it is time to stop viewing this part of the world exclusively as the golden goose that will pad (or even save) the western economy, and instead for what it truly is: a region governed by the Communist Party of China, which has little regard for human rights in search of world domination.

That's exactly what the members of the Canada-China Legislative Association say they will do when they arrive in China on Saturday, said Conservative MP Michael Cooper. Diplomatic tension between Canada and China has intensified since Meng's arrest on December 1.

After news broke of Kovrig and Spavor, Minister of Tourism Melanie Joly postponed a planned trip to China to attend a tourism event at the last minute.

"It is not convenient to disclose more information now".

The U.S State Department has called for the release of the two Canadians, while Germany, France, the European Union and Australia have also issued supportive statements.

Ottawa has yet to update its travel advisory for Canadians heading to, or who are already in, China, though the current instruction is to "exercise a high degree of caution". Since then two Canadian citizens have been detained by Chinese authorities, pending investigation.

"The message from Global Affairs Canada was that it was better that we go than not go", Cooper said.

Little is known about Kovrig's or Spavor's circumstances because they've each had only a single consular visit by Canada's ambassador to China, John McCallum, last month. Earlier in the day, a group of 36 Australian academics demanded their government "call for the immediate release of these two detainees".

Cooper said that despite planning to discuss the Canadians' detention, the objective of the trip is to engage directly with Chinese government officials to discuss a broad range of issues, such as trade.
