Cathay Pacific sells £12,000 business-class seats for £530 in ticketing blunder

Cathay Pacific will honour the cut-price fares

Flying business or first class from Vietnam to North American cities on Cathay Pacific would normally set you back tens of thousands of dollars.

He got a first class ticket from Da Nang in Vietnam to John F Kennedy airport in NY for HK$6600.

Last year, British Airways sold tickets on routes to Dubai and Tel Aviv for as little as £167.

Customers paid $675 (£529) for the return flight in August for a fare that usually costs $16,000 (£12,541). If true, the mistake would have cost the airline millions of dollars.

One person who seemingly managed to snap the ultra-cheap fare up was Mac Jaehnert. Travel bloggers quickly began talking about the low prices and some went to buy a ticket.

According to Cathay Pacific's website, first class includes a series of perks such as leather seats with built-in massagers and a large "private working area".

Social media users speculated that Cathay Pacific may not honour the flights. The online ticketing foul-up meant return fares of as low as $675 from Da Nang in Vietnam to NY at the front end of the plane, or a small fraction of its original price.

In 2014, Singapore Airlines made a similar mistake.

"When I did the math, what I paid is at about a 95 percent discount", he said.

At first, he thought it was a once in a lifetime deal or a mistake by the airline. The Department of Transportation (DOT) ruled in 2015 that airlines aren't legally obligated to honor mistake fares, although rescinding the seemingly marvelous deals will nearly certainly spark a customer uproar.

Hanoi-based pastor Jacob Bloemberg was one of the lucky customers who were able to purchase the tickets, which only lasted "for minutes".

"I thought, this has got to be either a once in a lifetime deal, or possibly a mistaken fare, possibly both", he told the BBC. The airline was widely praised after it admitted to the error but said it would cover all bookings.

This gaffe comes after the airline's computer system was hacked a year ago, exposing the personal data of more than 9 million customers in the industry's biggest airline data breach. It was the world's biggest airline data breach. The airline's name was misspelled on the side of the plane. The mistakes don't always end up being honored by the airlines though.

"I would've been fine if you'd chose to cancel".
