Congo orders European Union envoy to leave over sanctions

Protests in eastern Congo over election postponment - Entertainment News

Patients being monitored as possible Ebola patients fled a camp in eastern DR Congo on Thursday after it was attacked by demonstrators protesting further delays to the country's election, the health ministry said.

Five African heads of state on Wednesday voiced strong concern over the violence during the presidential campaign of the Democratic Republic of Congo, where voting has been postponed until March in the regions of Beni-Butembo and Yumbi.

That would also affect the response to the ongoing Ebola virus outbreak - the second-deadliest history - which is believed to have killed more than 350 people this year.

Opposition candidates call the delay a ploy to hurt their chances at the polls. The latest postponement pushed the vote from December 23 to Sunday after a fire in Kinshasa, destroyed voting materials. Furious opposition leaders called the situation "unacceptable" and said the delayed, ultimately meaningless election will effectively disenfranchise over a million voters.

Polling stations in Democratic Republic of Congo are ill-prepared for Sunday's presidential election, diplomats and an observer mission said, as new polling showed opposition candidate Martin Fayulu favoured to win.

In an interview with The Associated Press, President Joseph Kabila says it would be a "disaster" if people vote Sunday in two large communities in the Ebola outbreak zone, asserting that "a single person" could infect scores or hundreds of others.

On Wednesday, it declared the vote would be postponed again in violence-hit parts of the country.

A vast, mineral-rich country that straddles central Africa, the country has a reputation for political turmoil, corruption and poverty.

Despite the postponements in Beni-Butembo and Yumbi, the timetable for the presidential elections, has not changed.

Ambulances were seen racing towards the facility after the attack.

The protesters in Beni marched to the local election office demanding the right to vote on Sunday.

However health officials have said voters would sanitise their hands before and after voting.

To this Kabila responded, "The composition of the electoral commission does not give any advantages to anyone composant - meaning you have the majority [ruling party], you have the opposition which is represented in the commission, and of course the civil society". And in a separate report detailing the latest outbreak trends, the World Health Organization said cases continue across a geographically dispersed area, and although Ebola infection numbers continue to decline in Beni, the outbreak is intensifying in Butembo and Katwa, with new clusters popping up elsewhere.

With President Joseph Kabila's successor due to be sworn in next month, it appears the votes of more than a million people could be discounted.

Congo's health minister has said health authorities and electoral authorities had worked together on preparing for the election and that precautions had been taken to protect voters.

The Ebola virus is spread via infected bodily fluids, and some have anxious about using the touchscreens of voting machines.
