Presenting legal advice, May fans flames of #Brexit rebellion

British Prime Minister Theresa May has toured the UK touting her EU withdrawal deal

However, EU leaders have repeatedly said they will not reopen the divorce deal.

British lawmakers who favour leaving the European Union say the Prime Minister's deal keeps Britain bound too closely to the bloc while those who want to maintain close ties argue that it creates barriers between the United Kingdom and its biggest trading partner.

"The legal summary document is worse than we feared: the backstop customs union is indefinite, the United Kingdom would be a rule taker and the European Court (of Justice) is in charge of our destiny, rather than the sovereign United Kingdom parliament", former Brexit minister David Davis said.

He said: "What we are trying to achieve is something that gets a lot of support from colleagues and that the Government, we hope, will take forward because it will make a real difference to the vote".

His full advice has been published after the government was found in contempt of Parliament for not releasing it last month.

The prime minister's DUP allies - along with Tory MPs Philip Hollobone and Peter Bone - joined opposition parties in the unprecedented move.

In an interesting aside, Stephens noted that it is unlikely that Cox himself would have actually written the advice; it would be usual for an attorney-general to seek advice from a legal expert in that field.

"We are in the middle of five days of debate in parliament which will lead up to a vote on this issue", she told BBC Radio 4′s Today programme on Thursday.

Before the prime minister appeared at the despatch box, her government had gone down to defeat for the third time in an hour.

That could range from giving more time for May to find other ways to convince the parliament, to even helping Britain halt the Brexit process altogether, as many European Union leaders have regularly said would be their ultimate preferred option.

In his advice, dated 13 November, Mr Cox says signing up to the backstop was a "political decision".

May suffered the worst day in Parliament for a British government in 40 years, losing three crucial votes related to Brexit.

Keir Starmer, the shadow Brexit secretary who had tabled the demand for its publication, said having reviewed the legal advice it was "obvious why this needed to be placed in the public domain".

The amendment would add provisions for the Commons to "approve the Government's proposed approach, including whether or not an extension to the implementation period should be pursued; and parliamentary approval of the commencement of the powers implementing the Northern Ireland backstop".

Sir Chris, a staunch Brexiteer, is opposed to the Prime Minister's deal.

Eastbourne MP Mr Lloyd said in his resignation letter that he had promised his constituents that he would "support the deal the PM brought back from the European Union and not back calls for a second referendum".

The Labour Party and others, including the DUP, said that the vote is so important for the future of the country that lawmakers should be able to see any detailed legal warnings concerning parts of the withdrawal agreement.

"The fact is, during the course of this administration we have won the overwhelming majority of votes that have taken place on the floor of the House of Commons".

May is drumming up support for her deal, but faces daunting odds with scores of her own MPs set to vote against the government on December 11.

Under the Withdrawal Agreement, the backstop would be introduced if a trade deal had not been agreed by both sides by the time the transition period ends in December 2020.

"She is now talking to colleagues, and listening to them", said Alison Donnelly, May's spokeswoman. "The botched deal negotiated by the Prime Minister is not good enough for my constituents or the country".
