Chinese Tech Giant Huawei's CFO Arrested Abroad, Faces Extradition To US

Huawei finance chief arrested in Canada faces extradition to US over Iran sanctions – report

"At the request of the USA side, the Canadian side arrested a Chinese citizen not violating any American or Canadian law", a statement from the Chinese embassy in Canada said.

Huawei CFO and deputy chair Wanzhou Meng has reportedly been arrested in Canada on the USA government's request for allegedly violating United States trade sanctions with Iran.

In 2007, Ms. Meng served as a board secretary for a Huawei holding company that owned Skycom Tech, a Hong Kong-based company with business in Iran and employees who said they worked for "Huawei-Skycom", according to a person familiar with the matter.

The Globe and Mail reported earlier Wednesday that she was arrested on suspicion of violating USA trade sanctions on Iran.

"The ban was sought by Ms. Meng", continued the statement.

"Americans are grateful that our Canadian partners have arrested the Chief Financial Officer of a giant Chinese telecom company for breaking US sanctions against Iran, " he said.

Huawei said it complies with all laws and rules where it operates, including export controls and sanctions of the United Nations, the USA and European Union.

In April, the Wall Street Journal reported that Huawei was being investigated by NY prosecutors on suspicion of breaking the Iran sanctions.

In the midst of a tentative trade truce between the United States and China, the arrest of Huawei's CFO presents one more issue of contention for leaders in both countries to deal with.

The US Justice Department declined to comment.

U.S. prosecutors were investigating whether Huawei violated USA sanctions on Iran.

US prosecutors in NY have been investigating whether Huawei violated USA sanctions in relation to Iran.

It is not clear if Meng's arrest is connected to the U.S. probe into Huawei.

The Chinese embassy in Ottawa issued a statement condemning the action.

Meng, who is also a vice chair on Huawei's board, was arrested on December 1 in Vancouver.

The report said existing Huawei equipment at the firm's current 3G and 4G networks would also be removed.

At least 13 pages of a proposal to sell Hewlett-Packard computer equipment to Iran were marked "Huawei confidential". News of the probe broke in April 2018 when it was reported by the Wall Street Journal.

Huawei could not be reached for comment at the time of publication.

Skycom was described by Huawei as one of its "major local partners", although the Chinese company said neither it nor Skycom ultimately provided the HP equipment.
