Carbon emissions forecast to hit record levels this year

Tackling climate change could save millions of lives, report says

The report says that growth in global Carbon dioxide emissions could put the Paris Agreement goal of keeping the global rise in temperatures to within 2 degree Celsius of pre-industrial times "in jeopardy".

The findings, co-authored by a team of almost 80 scientists, were published in the journal Open Access Earth System Science Data.

Guterres said in order to achieve that, global emissions from 2010 levels to 2030 must be halved.

"In short, we need a complete transformation of our global energy economy, as well as how we manage land and forest resources", Guterres said.

The figures were revealed as negotiators meet in Poland to draw up a rulebook to deliver the Paris Agreement on climate change, under which countries agreed to limit warming to "well below 2C" above pre-industrial levels and to pursue efforts to curb temperatures to the safer 1.5C level.

"Additional increases in 2019 remain uncertain but appear likely because of persistent growth in oil and natural gas use and strong growth projected for the global economy".

Use of coal - the biggest carbon emitter - is rising. Though China's per capita emission is higher than the global per capita emission, India's per capita carbon footprint is much below the global average.

Oil and gas use have grown nearly unabated over the last decade.

Tackling climate change could save millions of lives, report says

China continues to remain the largest emitter of the world, with its emissions in 2018 likely to reach 10.3 billion tonnes, an increase of 4.7 per cent from previous year.

Coal is likely to dominate the Chinese energy system for decades, even if the skyrocketing growth of the mid-2000s is unlikely to return, the researchers said. Most of that growth can be traced to an exceptionally hot summer and cold winter.

A study released to coincide with the event warned that progress in adopting the pledges, which include Western nations transferring $100bn of their taxpayers" cash a year to poorer countries by 2020, was threatened by U.S. President Donald Trump and the "America First' approach which saw the president announce the country's withdrawal from the agreement in June.

United States emissions are expected to resume their downward trend in 2019 as cheap gas, wind and solar power continue to displace coal.

China, India and the European Union are setting the pace.

In India, emissions are expected to grow by a solid 6.3 per cent in 2018, pushed by strong economic growth of around 8 per cent per year.

Some scientists expressed frustration with the pace of change.

Mohamed Adow, worldwide climate lead for Christian Aid, said poor people in developing countries most exposed to climate hazards simply can not wait.
