Trump could meet Kim Jong Un in early 2019

G20 declaration stresses fair sustainable development

Buenos Aires: The United States and China on Saturday announced a ceasefire in their tariffs war, hours after US President Donald Trump upended another worldwide forum by snubbing G20 action on trade disputes and climate change.

The Kingdom's appeal has grown after the launch of Saudi Vision 2030, which aims to diversify the economy by implementing ambitious reforms that have attracted the attention of global investors.

Speaking to reporters on Air Force One, Trump hailed his agreement with Xi.

U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping held high-stakes trade talks in Argentina on Saturday, and both sides signaled they made progress toward defusing a damaging tariffs war between the world's two largest economies. China gets a delay on additional tariffs, while the USA gets greater purchases of agriculture goods while retaining leverage to push for more structural changes to the economy.

Xi's remarks also gave no indication of whether any breakthrough was imminent.

"China and the United States are two important countries with major influence in the world and shoulder important responsibilities for global peace and prosperity", he said.

President Donald Trump is cancelling a planned news conference at the Group of 20 summit in Argentina Saturday, "out of respect for the Bush Family" after death of former President George H.W. Bush.

Mr Trump had earlier said the pair shared a "very special" relationship. Trump has also threatened to put tariffs on another $267 billion worth of Chinese imports.

The state-run China Daily said that the Pacific powers could strike a deal in Buenos Aires but warned the United States against pushing too hard on technology.

The two countries are also at odds militarily over China's extensive claims in the South China Sea and US warship movements through the highly sensitive Taiwan Strait.

The differences laid bare in Buenos Aires came a day before United Nations climate talks were to get underway on the other side of the world in the Polish city of Katowice.

What was more likely is that they reach a truce, buying time for more substantive talks, analysts said.

The communique mentioned the brewing trade war between the U.S. and China.

Trade hard-liners such as Robert Lighthizer, the US trade representative, and Peter Navarro, a White House trade advisor, have advocated a much tougher approach to China, including pushing Beijing for a root-to-branch reform of its entire economic model. In doing so, they cited the trade conflict as well as political uncertainty. At the start of the dinner, Trump struck an optimistic note. It is unclear whether the transaction could be revived even with China's acquiescence.

Aboard Air Force One, the president told reporters that he would formally terminate the 24-year-old North American Free Trade Agreement in a political gamble created to force wavering lawmakers to back his replacement treaty dubbed the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement, or USMCA.

Mr. Trump met with German Chancellor Angela Merkel earlier on Saturday.

Last spring, it looked like Beijing and Washington might have found a peaceful resolution. China also agreed to boost its purchases of agricultural and industrial goods to reduce its trade imbalance with the USA, she said.

But the cease-fire didn't last. Or at least curb the strong-arm tactics.

After President Donald Trump's meeting with President Xi Jinping of China in Buenos Aries on December 1, both sides announced a 90-day pause in the trade dispute. "We'll see", he said.

"US alleges that China - with its intertwined government & corporate sector - gets around WTO free market principles". He said Trump is "not going away". He said there were three sites under consideration, but he declined to name them. "I don't believe it", he told reporters.
