US Migrant Caravan: Thousands travel to US border to seek asylum

Forty two people were arrested after a group of migrants in Tijuana the Mexican city broke away from a peaceful protest

San Diego Sector Border Control chief patrol agent Rodney Scott said Monday morning on CNN that when the migrants approached border fences, they 'immediately started throwing rocks and debris at our agents, taunting our agents'.

US Customs and Border Protection Commissioner, Kevin McAleenan, said 69 migrants were arrested on the California side of the border after trying to cross from Tijuana to the US after tear gas was used to stop them.

The vast majority of people attempting to file an asylum claim are allowed to do so once they reach the US, but often don't see a judge for several years while they wait to see a judge. That would be a significant shift in asylum policy that could keep Central Americans in Mexico for more than a year. "It appears in some cases that the limited number of women and children in the caravan are being used by the organizers as "human shields" when they confront law enforcement", she said.

"Do it by plane, do it by bus, do it any way you want, but they are NOT coming into the United States of America", the president, who spent his Thanksgiving break with his family at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, Florida said.

The US president's threat comes a day after American authorities closed the country's busiest southern border crossing and fired tear gas into crowds.

"We will close the Border permanently if need be", he added before calling on Congress to fund the controversial border wall.

For weeks before the 6 November congressional elections, Mr Trump raised the alarm about the migrant caravans and ordered some 5,800 USA troops to the border to support border patrol agents. "This woman placed her own life and her children's lives in peril".

Geoffrey Hoffman, a professor and director of the University of Houston Law Center Immigration Clinic, which represents migrants applying for asylum, said the government would use it to push the argument that the migrants should remain in Mexico.

Around 500 men, women and children, part of a caravan of roughly 5,000 mainly Hondurans who have been trekking towards the USA for weeks, scrambled over a rusted metal fence and surged into a concrete riverbed towards San Diego on Sunday. "This is the responsibility of Mexico's government". If the United States doesn't want us, I'm going to stay here.

President Donald Trump said the US will close its southern border with Mexico if needed, a day after USA agents shot several rounds of tear gas at migrants, some of whom tried to breach a border fence. It is the most heavily trafficked land border in the western hemisphere.

"We were deluded into believing that we had already reached the United States, and that they would grant us asylum", Colon told AFP.

She and hundreds of other Central American migrants were blocked by Mexican police and staged a protest in front of the border, some rushing the U.S fence.

"I do say, why are they there?" "I think there is no chance", Mejia said. Instead, the plan would require asylum seekers to remain in Mexico until their asylum status is granted.
