Tear Gas Deployed At California Border Crossing; Tensions Mounting

Cesar Elvir 20 from Honduras and his one-year-old cousin Ahslyn part of a caravan of thousands of migrants from Central America trying to reach the United States rest in temporary shelter in Tijuana Mexico

The migrants' arrival has been met by some opposition from people in Tijuana, where many shelters were already at capacity, and on the US side of the border by increased security measures that include members of the military deployed there by President Donald Trump. Mexico's Milenio TV showed images of migrants climbing over fences and peeling back metal sheeting to enter.

Protesters march along the USA side of the southern border during a rally to show solidarity with the migrant caravan on Sundayy, November 25, as US immigration agents deployed tear gas to disperse hundreds of migrants who rushed the border.

"Similarly to what we saw the first wave of the caravan that came up a week ago or so", he continued, "the group immediately started throwing rocks and debris at our agents, taunting the agents".

Tijuana city officials say they have no money to improve conditions at the sports center, where more than 5,000 migrants are sheltering in a space with capacity for no more than 3,500.

Hours earlier, The Washington Post quoted her as saying that the incoming administration of Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador had agreed to allow migrants to stay in Mexico as a "short-term solution" while the US considered their applications for asylum.

On Monday morning President Trump tweeted that numerous migrants are "stone cold criminals", and threatened to close the border permanently. "We must choose to be better than this, and @realDonaldTrump expected nothing less when he deployed thousands of troops to the border with the order to shoot to kill", Amnesty said on Twitter.

During this ordeal, the San Ysidro Port of Entry, located near San Diego, was at a stand still.

Some attempted to enter through San Ysidro, Secretary of Homeland Security Kirstjen Nielsen said in a statement. We will close the Border permanently if need be. She had signed up for an interview with a US asylum officer, the first step in the asylum application process - but the surge of migrants with the caravan meant that she would be waiting for weeks.

Rights groups have accused the US government of stalling the processing of asylum claims, allegations the US Customs and Border Protection denies.

Those who tried to "violently" and "illegally" enter the USA would be deported immediately, the Mexican interior ministry said on Sunday. Residents of Tijuana work, study and visit the United States each day, and the border closures affect them, too, Juan Manuel Gastélum Buenrostro said on Twitter on Sunday.

"People had thought that they were going to open the gates, but that was a lie", Caballero said. "Do it by plane, do it by bus, do it anyway you want, but they are NOT coming into the United States of America. Congress, fund the WALL!" the United States president tweeted on Monday.

Earlier Sunday, Gastelum said he will not allow bilateral relations to be broken by bad actions of the migrant caravan. During his presidential campaign, he promised he'd have Mexico pay for the wall. The Mexican government described Sunday's events as "acts of provocation" that were "far from helpful" for the migrants' objectives.

Mexico's Interior Ministry said Sunday the country has sent 11,000 Central Americans back to their countries of origin since October 19, when the first caravan entered the country.

Mexico is on track to send a total of around 100,000 Central Americans back home by the end of this year.
