Deadly Camp Fire Fully Contained; Burned 15,336 Acres, Killed At Least 85

Пожары в Калифорнии возникла новая опасность

The Camp fire ignited on November 8 and has destroyed almost 19,000 buildings, majority homes, more than the worst eight fires in California's history combined, the agency said, with thousands of people displaced.

Alameda County Sheriff Coroner officers search for human remains at a burned residence in Paradise, California on 12 November, 2018.

The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection said in an incident update that containment is now at 100 per cent.

The wildfire, which started November 8, burned more than 153,000 acres, according to California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection officials.

The fire, which broke out on November 8, is so far known to have killed 87 people and burned almost 14,000 homes.

On Sunday, crews continued sifting through muddy ash for human remains in and around the devastated town.

The nation's deadliest wildfire in the past century has killed at least 84 people, and more than 560 are still unaccounted for. It dropped an estimated 7 inches (18 centimeters) of rain over the burn area over a three-day period without causing significant mudslides, said Hannah Chandler-Cooley of the National Weather Service. The number was revised down from 475 as people who were believed missing were found in shelters, staying in hotels or with friends, officials said, adding that many had not known they were on the list.

Rains are helping douse a massive and deadly Northern California wildfire. Authorities also warn that danger still looms as rainfall after a fire places the area at a high risk for debris flow, flash flooding, and mudslides.

As of Saturday evening, the uncontained portion of the fire was along steep terrain unsafe for firefighters due to recent heavy rains, the agency said.

Three people died, and 1,643 buildings, a lot of them homes, were destroyed, officials said.

The search for remains came to a temporary standstill in Paradise on Friday after rain and strong winds made fire-weakened trees risky, CNN affiliate KCRA reported.

The exact cause of the fire remains under investigation according to authorities.

The town of Paradise was a popular destination for retirees, with people aged 65 or older accounting for a quarter of its 27,000 residents.

In Southern California, more residents returned to areas evacuated because of another wildfire as crews repaired power, telephone and gas utilities.
