'Thank you President T': Trump tweets as holiday break ends

Mexico's new government agrees to Trump's 'asylum waiting room' plan

This is despite media reports saying the new government had agreed to a "Remain in Mexico" policy during U.S. background checks as a "short term solution".

But she rowed back on this just hours later, saying in a statement: "There is no agreement of any sort between the incoming Mexican government and the USA government".

Trump said in a pair of Saturday evening tweets that migrants at the U.S. -Mexico border "will not be allowed into the United States until their claims are individually approved in court". "All will stay in Mexico", his tweets assured, and if needed, he was ready to close the border.

Many are now waiting in temporary shelters in the border city of Tijuana, leading the mayor declare a humanitarian crisis.

Many are seeking U.S. asylum, but press reports say U.S. customs at some crossing points are only handling fewer than 50 applications a day.

Stephanie Leutert, director of the Mexico Security Initiative at the University of Texas at Austin, described the Remain in Mexico plan as a strategy to take away the ability of migrants to live and work in the US while cases are processed.

The White House has also pushed an alternative "safe third country" approach in talks with Mexican officials. But she told Reuters that plans to assume "safe third country" status were "ruled out".

But by early evening, the picture grew more complex, as the incoming Mexican government said there was "no agreement of any sort".

This could potentially end a system Mr Trump has decried as "catch and release" that has, until now, often allowed those seeking refuge to wait on safer U.S. soil.

The US has expressed hostility to the arrival of new migrants on its soil and says it has been trying to negotiate a solution to the so-called crisis for months. He also admonished the US central bank over the cost of borrowing money.

Tijuana officials anticipate that as many as 10,000 Central American migrants could eventually converge on the city and be stuck there for months as they seek to file asylum claims in the United States, a time-consuming process.

Asylum seekers will be given an initial screening to determine whether they face imminent danger by staying in Mexico, where violence is widespread.

"I think what they're going to try to do is reach some type of an informal agreement by which Mexico would keep the migrants until the situation is solved in the United States, but it's very controversial here in Mexico".

"All will stay in Mexico", Trump added in second tweet, that also threatened to close the U.S. southern border if necessary.

He has expressed determination to stop the caravan from reaching the US, deploying troops to the border and warning of consequences should countries assist the caravan in its journey.

"We only will allow those who come into our Country legally".

Gastélum said on Friday that he'd asked the United Nations for aid to help with the influx of asylum seekers. "Our very strong policy is Catch and Detain", he wrote in his Twitter message Saturday.
