Port still running in Yemen's Hodeida after air strikes

A military official in Hodeida confirmed seven civilians had died without giving further details

A government official based in Aden said that the a number of refugee camps had been established to receive new displaced people from Hodeidah.

The truce followed advances by the coalition in their latest attempt to retake the city from the Shiite rebels, known as Houthis, with its forces now 5 kilometers (3 miles) short of the port, Yemen's traditional lifeline.

"The Saudi-led Coalition have agreed to the evacuation of wounded Houthis from Yemen, one of the key stumbling blocks to the UN Geneva talks in September". Yemeni officials said Tuesday, Nov. 13, 2018, that an informal agreement to reduce hostilities between Saudi-led coalition forces and rebels in and around Hodeida has taken hold.

Western powers now "have real leverage", Beckerle said, "but that requires the US, UK and France actually show the coalition they are serious".

"Whilst this is ongoing, it would be inappropriate to comment further".

The port s deputy director, Yahya Sharafeddine, said the main entrance to the docks had been "the target of air raids" but was fully functioning. Welcoming the move Californian Democrat Ted Lieu said, "I've been calling for this for over three years".

Four other port employees told AFP that one strike had killed a rebel commander and three of his guards, while a second strike had wounded another commander and his guards.

The Huthis, who seized Hodeida in a 2014 takeover that included the capital, on Tuesday accused the government of the attacks on the port via their Al-Massirah TV.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned Monday against the "catastrophic" consequences of a possible destruction of the port of Hodeida.

Lowcock said the United Nations was ready to play a role in "ensuring the appropriate use of key facilities, especially around Hodeida".

The ongoing fighting left almost 600 people killed in Hodeidah from both warring parties during weeks of ferocious fighting and intensified airstrikes launched by the Saudi Arabia-led coalition.

There have been global outrage over the murder of US-based Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi, and after Democratic and Republican politicians had threatened to take action in Congress next week over the refuelling operations.

Pentagon chief Jim Mattis on Saturday confirmed his country had halted its controversial aerial refuelling support for coalition aircraft involved in the Yemen war.

The UN is pushing for peace talks by the end of the year.

"Serious consideration is being given to a set of political ideas and confidence-building measures that would allow for the start of political talks in Sweden by the end of November", the statement continued.
