Democrat wins Arizona Senate race

Kyrsten Sinema

Democrat Kyrsten Sinema won Arizona's open U.S. Senate seat Monday in a race that was among the most closely watched in the nation, beating Republican Rep. Martha McSally in the battle to replace GOP Sen.

Sinema will join Senate as its second openly LGBT member, with Democratic Senator Tammy Baldwin of Wisconsin winning her re-election race in Wisconsin, a state that President Donald Trump carried two years ago. She will not only be the state's first female senator, but she will also be the first openly bisexual senator in US history.

It is the first time a Democrat has held a Senate seat in Arizona since 1995, and ensures the Democrats will fill at least 47 of the Senate's 100 seats, with Florida's race going to a recount and MS awaiting the results of a run-off later this month.

In the short term, the Democratic gains in historically Republican districts give the party a wider margin in the House of Representatives to launch investigations and subpoenas against Mr Trump's team. Two Senate seats - MS and Florida - are still hanging in the balance.

Then, in August, longtime GOP Sen.

Ms. McSally, who had the lead at the end of Election Day on November 6, conceded on Monday, with almost all votes counted, as postal ballots were tallied.

Sinema said the former prisoner of war and GOP presidential nominee was "irreplaceable" and "taught us to assume the best in others, to seek compromise instead of sewing division, & to always put country ahead of party". McSally also claimed that health care is not one of the "things that matter", something voters sharply disagreed with her on.

Sinema got another big boost from Pima County, where she is continuing to pick up four votes for every three for McSally. Democratic lawmaker Kyrsten Sinema is expected to move her office from the House, where she is now, to the Senate. Dean Heller, and prevailed in Arizona, where Trump won in 2016. McSally unsuccessfully tried to paint her as a liberal Democrat.

The Arizona-born politician, who spoke at the Human Rights Campaign gala this year, co-sponsored the Equality Act, which would amend the 1964 Civil Rights Act to also ban discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity.

That's a volatile issue in Arizona with its growing, Democratic-leaning immigrant population. "First, what was a reliable red state is now very much in play for Democrats in 2020". Republican Sen. Jon Kyl, who was appointed after McCain's death, has pledged not to run. In this election, Democrats expanded their share in the state Legislature, though they're still the minority. Despite falling behind, he said: "The latest release provides compelling evidence that the remaining uncounted ballots are favourable to Martha".
