Google revising sexual harassment policies after worker backlash

In Mountain View Dublin New York and more Google employees walked out to protest the way Google handles sexual misconduct allegations

(He does not address discrimination claims.) The company will also begin providing more detailed information about the process and outcomes in sexual harassment investigations.

San Francisco: Google on Thursday outlined changes to its handling of sexual misconduct complaints, hoping to calm outrage that triggered a worldwide walkout of workers last week.

"Going forward, we will provide more transparency on how we handle concerns", Pichai said in a note addressed to employees. "This is an area where we need to continually make progress and are committed to doing so".

Pichai promised that Google will be more transparent with how concerns are handled, and provide better support and care to those who raise such issues with the company.

Meanwhile, Google plans to create a new section in its annual Investigations Report focused on sexual harassment, detailing the number of claims over time and disciplinary actions taken.

And next year, all employees will be required to complete sexual harassment training annually. Those who don't comply will be docked one rating in the year-end Perf (Google's performance review system).

He said in a document attached to a blog post online: 'Our policy is clear: Excessive consumption of alcohol is not permitted when you are at work, performing Google business, or attending a Google-related event, whether onsite or offsite'.

In September, McDonalds employees also went on a historic, multi-state strike in the U.S. against sexual harassment.

But the Tech Workers Coalition, which backed last week's action, said the measures did not go almost far enough, particularly where it related to contractors who worked with the firm.

Google has been able to keep its clout as one of the most influential companies globally.

The company later said that over the past two years, 48 other employees - including 13 considered to be senior staff - had been fired over sexual harassment issues. That's happening externally, with increased scrutiny by regulators and politicians, and internally with reports and rising complaints about Google's permissive culture when it comes to executive conduct and relationships with co-workers.

Updates and expansion of Google's mandatory sexual harassment training. A massive turnout at the "Googleplex" in Silicon Valley was the final stage of a global walkout that began in Asia and spread to Google offices in Europe.

Google employees walked out in protest.

In an unsigned statement from organizers, protesters called for an end to forced arbitration in harassment and discrimination cases, a practice that requires employees to give up their right to sue and often includes confidentiality agreements.

Google on Thursday announced it's reforming the way it handles sexual misconduct cases.

"They all have the same root cause, which is a concentration of power and a lack of accountability at the top", organizer and Google employee Stephanie Parker said in a press release.
