‘We’re not letting you in’, Trump warns migrants

James Mattis

The group, which is mostly in Mexico and heading north, has caught the ire of top American officials, including President Donald Trump, who has vowed not to let them illegally enter the country.

The United Nations estimates that 7,000 people have joined the caravan since it set out from San Pedro Sula, Honduras October 13.

He told them to return to their home countries and if they want, they can apply for citizenship status like millions of others are doing.

The Commander-in-Chief's comments come as approximately 1,700 migrants abandoned the caravan; citing lack of water, medicine, and extreme weather as they turned south and returned to their country of origin.

Trump added on Thursday, Oct. 25, "I am bringing out the military for this national emergency".

"I must, in the strongest of terms, ask Mexico to stop this onslaught", Trump tweeted.

The troops will not engage in lethal operations to stop the migrants. They will include engineers to help with the construction of tents and fencing, doctors for medical support, and potentially some personnel to operate drones along the border, the officials said, speaking on the condition of anonymity because the deployment had not yet been finished.

The exact details have not yet been finalized, the sources said, and some of the more extreme ideas are a source of internal debate within the administration.

In 2017, the US had 331,700 asylum claims, more than any country in the world, according to the U.N. Refugee Agency.

Under standard U.S. procedures, the migrants, assuming they reached the southern border, would be detained for not having the required documents and asked whether they are afraid of returning to their home.

Trump last week threatened to cut off foreign aid to Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador should the caravan of people fleeing their homeland attempt to cross into the us illegally. Kirstjen Nielsen, the Homeland Security secretary, who has briefed Trump about the caravan as well as data showing a large uptick in the number of apprehensions at the border over the past year, has been leading the effort. That's almost double the asylum claims the USA fielded in 2015 and almost quadruple the claims in 2013. But those members remain under the control of the governors of the states where they're positioned, and their activities are limited to supportive roles, such as providing surveillance.

The planned deployment of active-duty troops is in response to a request from the Department of Homeland Security, which manages the Border Patrol.

In April, Trump said he would send thousands of National Guard troops to the southern border. So far, only a little over 2,000 have been used. "Wait'll you see what happens over the next couple of weeks".
