Saudi handling of Khashoggi killing 'worst cover-up ever'

"In terms of what we ultimately do I'm going to leave it very much - in conjunction with me - up to Congress", Trump told reporters Tuesday in the Oval Office.

U.S. President Donald Trump talks to reporters about the killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi in Turkey during a bill-signing ceremony at the White House in Washington, Oct. 23, 2018.

The UK Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt said on Monday that the Saudi government's explanation for the death of Jamal Khashoggi was not "credible".

There was no way to corroborate the Saudi account, which paints the suspects as rogue operators.

Critics have alleged that the arrests are created to absolve Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, the kingdom's heir-apparent, of any responsibility for Khashoggi's death.

"Blaming some intelligence members for this matter will neither satisfy us nor the global community", stated the Turkish president.

The Turkish president said Saudi Arabia admitted to the killing. JPMorgan Chase and Goldman Sachs also canceled their appearances and Siemens CEO Joe Kaeser said "justice must be served".

The Trump administration revoked the visas Tuesday of some Saudi officials implicated in the killing of writer Jamal Khashoggi in its first punitive measure against its longtime Middle East partner, as President Donald Trump denounced the kingdom for one of the "worst cover-ups in the history of cover-ups".

The newspaper said Mr Trump declined to say whether he believed the crown prince's denials. However, he kept pressure on the Saudi government with his demands for the Saudi suspects. "To cover up such savagery would hurt the human conscience", he said.

Erdogan told Turkish lawmakers that various members of a Saudi team of more than a dozen personnel, including a military general, conducted some kind of survey of a forest near Istanbul and also disabled security cameras near the Saudi consulate before Khashoggi arrived.

He also said that "the information obtained so far and the evidence found shows that Khashoggi was murdered in a ferocious manner".

"Why has the body of someone who was officially said to be killed not been found yet?" asked Erdogan. "Why is the body of a person who has officially been accepted as killed still not around?" The case has shocked the world and raised suspicions that a Saudi hit squad planned the writer's killing after he walked into the consulate on October 2, and then attempted to cover it up. France has suspended political visits to Saudi Arabia.

The Saudis blame a fistfight that escalated out of control, but in a highly anticipated speech on Tuesday, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan asserted that the "brutal" killing had been planned days before Khashoggi entered the Saudi consulate in Istanbul.

Turkish media have identified a hit squad of 15 people who are alleged to have been involved in Mr Khashoggi's murder and Saudi authorities have arrested 18 people in connection with the death. Mario Ritter was the editor.
