National Security Adviser John Bolton confident Russian Federation violated treaty

US will increase nuclear arsenal if others don`t `come to their senses`: Donald Trump

"We're the ones who have stayed in the agreement and we've honoured the agreement, but Russian Federation has not unfortunately honoured the agreement, so we're going to terminate the agreement and we're going to pull out", he told reporters.

Trump repeated on Monday that Russian Federation had not adhered to the treaty and said his vow to increase the U.S. nuclear stockpile included a posture against China as well.

But speaking at a news conference after his talks with Putin, Bolton gave no indication of any change of course on the INF treaty.

Former leader of the Soviet Union Mikhail Gorbachev, who signed the treaty in 1987 with then-US President Ronald Reagan, criticized Trump's plan as "unacceptable" and "very irresponsible", RIA Novosti reported.

Some observers said Trump's announcement could be a move to push Russian Federation and China into compliance, but others suggest both countries may have something to gain by ditching the agreement.

Moscow has further charged that anti-missile installations that the U.S. has deployed surrounding Russian Federation in eastern Europe could easily be converted into launchpads for offensive missiles.

President Donald Trump said on Monday that the United States plans to increase it's already massive nuclear arsenal, a move that could start another arms race.

In an interview with Russian radio station Ekho Moskvy, Bolton on Monday accused Russia of having violated the treaty for the past five years.

"China would have little choice but to spend more on the military - read less on the economy - or come to the negotiating table to come to an agreement about mid-range systems", said Nagy.

Mr. Peskov told journalists on Monday that ditching the treaty "will make the world more dangerous" and rejected US claims that Moscow has violated the pact, instead accusing Washington of doing so.

It banned ground-launched medium-range missiles, with a range of between 500 and 5,500km (310-3,400 miles), both nuclear and conventional.

Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov on Tuesday evening said that USA accusations about elections interference were "mentioned but not discussed", according to Interfax.

In talks the previous day with his Russian counterpart, Nikolai Patrushev, and a dinner with Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, he said he discussed U.S. plans for withdrawal from the 1987 treaty, among other issues, the news service reported.

"Thanks to the INF treaty, nearly 3,000 missiles with nuclear and conventional warheads have been removed and verifiably destroyed", the statement said.

Experts warn that China would put pressure on countries in the region to refuse United States requests to position missiles there.

"If you read President's statements [Putin], he was saying that the breach in the INF treaty forces Russian Federation to take measures in order to ensure its security". It was a major landmark for nuclear nonproliferation; as the Arms Control Association explains, "The treaty marked the first time the superpowers had agreed to reduce their nuclear arsenals, eliminate an entire category of nuclear weapons, and utilize extensive on-site inspections for verification".

Belousov said Russian Federation has repeatedly called for "appropriate conditions that would allow us to take practical measures to free the world from nuclear weapons". The UK voiced its approval, accusing Russian Federation of non-compliance with the treaty.

Still, Belousov said, "we are prepared to work together with our USA colleagues on the entire set of problems regarding the INF".

"The world doesn't need a new arms race that would benefit no one and on the contrary would bring even more instability".

Commenting on a statement by the government in Beijing that China wants the United States to remain in the INF, Bolton said, "If I were living in Beijing, I would probably want the same thing".
