At least 10 killed in blast at Crimea college

Kerch FM

At least 17 people were killed and 40 more injured in an explosion and shooting on October 17 at a polytechnic college in Kerch, a city of 146,000 people in Crimea, the Ukrainian territory that Russian Federation has occupied since its military invasion of the peninsula in 2014.

Aksyonov said on television that the student, a local man acting alone, killed himself after the attack.

The TASS news agency cited Russia's National Anti-terrorism Committee as saying the suspect's body has been found inside the college.

Speaking to journalists and parents of missing students in the city of Kerch, where the shooting took place, Crimean leader Sergei Aksyonov said the death toll stood at 18 plus the killer.

Kerch is the landing point and namesake of a bridge that opened earlier this year to connect Crimea to Russian Federation. Military units were deployed near the college to help emergency agencies.

His body was later found in the college with what they said were self-inflicted gunshot wounds.

Russia's 2014 annexation of Crimea triggered Western sanctions.

Law enforcement officials said they were treating the incident, in which numerous victims were teenage pupils, as a terrorist attack.

Russian President Vladimir Putin, who is now in the Black Sea resort of Sochi, said in televised comments that a "tragic event" had happened and that "as a result of an explosion of an explosive device, people died and many are injured".

It was not clear what the explosive was, if the attacker detonated it, or how many people it wounded.

A sombre-faced Putin deplored the attack as a "tragic event" and offered his condolences to the victims' families at a news conference in the southern city of Sochi, where he was meeting with Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi.

Investigators said the explosive device went off in the college's canteen and that it was "packed with metal objects".

Committee spokesman Andrei Przhezdomsky said sappers were inspecting the building for other explosive devices.

A source in the emergency services told RIA Novosti state news agency that Roslyakov had legally acquired a gun licence.

Another witness who gave his name as Sergei and who worked nearby said in a video on the Kerch.tv website that he heard "a bang and shots". "I saw people without legs, without arms". They burst in five or 10 minutes after I'd left.

Video showed terrified students running and screaming during the attack on Kerch Polytechnic College which is near a new bridge connecting the region to Russian Federation.
