Suspect in Bulgarian journalist slaying arrested in Germany

Police arrested a suspect Wednesday in the murder and rape of Bulgarian television journalist Viktoria Marinova Saturday

Authorities can not yet say whether or not Marinova's murder in the northern Bulgarian city of Ruse was linked to her work as a broadcast journalist, according to Bulgarian Chief Prosecutor Sotir Tsatsarov.

Bulgaria's chief prosecutor Sotir Tsatsarov named the suspect as Severin Krasimirov, born in 1997, and said he was already sought in connection with another rape and murder.

Viktoria Marinova, a 30-year-old Bulgarian journalist who had recently become the anchor of a talk show focused on investigative reporting, was raped and killed on Saturday in a case that has sent shockwaves through Europe.

In the week before her murder, Marinova presented a TV show that broadcast interviews with reporters from the Bivol website on alleged fraud involving European Union funds linked to businessmen and politicians.

The brutal killing of the Bulgarian journalist Victoria Marinova has drawn worldwide condemnation and calls from media watchdogs for a comprehensive global investigation.

Marinova, 30, hosted a TV show that featured two investigative journalists who were detained for their work on suspected fraud involving European Union funds.

The commission vice president, Frans Timmermans, said he was "shocked by the horrendous murder of Victoria [sic] Marinova".

Interior Minister Mladen Marinov later confirmed she had also been raped.

"We have collected a lot of evidence which for the time being suggests that the person is guilty".

After her death, prosecutors opened an investigation into GP Group, the private Bulgarian building company that Biro and Stoyanov spotlighted in their report, according to The Associated Press.

The body of Viktoria Marinova was found over the weekend in Bulgaria's northern city of Ruse near an alley.

Ms Marinova's death has also angered many in Bulgaria, where there is public frustration with corruption and an inefficient justice system that has been criticised by the European Commission.

Marinova's last show included an interview with two journalists who were arrested last month while working on a graft probe related to European Union funding.

They did not offer any new details about the case after their meeting with the local authorities.

In a statement from the United Nations cultural agency's headquarters in Paris, Azoulay added: "Attacks on journalists erode the fundamental human right to freedom of expression and its corollaries, press freedom and free access to information".

Reporters Without Borders, in their 2018 country report for India, have stressed the wave of Hindu nationalism promoted by the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi poses deadly threat to press freedom in India. In a summary, the organization noted that "corruption and collusion between media, politicians, and oligarchs is widespread". Urgently call for a full and thorough investigation.

"All versions" regarding the murder were on the table, the vice director of local police, Ilian Enchev, said.

A vigil was being held for Marinova in the Bulgarian capital later Monday.
