US Senate plans procedural vote on Kavanaugh in bitter confirmation fight

An undated

USA senators, expected to vote Friday morning on the confirmation of President Donald Trump's Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, are still highly divided along partisan lines over the results of a probe into allegations of sexual misconduct against the judge.

Kavanaugh was testifying against multiple allegations of sexual misconduct, including gang rape.

"This is what democracy looks like!" protesters shouted outside the Supreme Court, voicing their opposition to Brett Kavanaugh's nomination to the high court but somehow speaking for everyone on every side on a day of passion, chaos and effect.

Trump nominated Kavanaugh to replace Justice Anthony Kennedy, who had been a swing vote on a panel now equally divided between four conservative and four liberal justices.

The Senate is set to take a procedural vote at 10:30 a.m. ET Friday to end debate on the nomination.

Also interviewed was Tim Gaudette, who, according to Judge Kavanaugh's calendars, hosted a party in July 1982 that Democrats say could have been the get-together where the assault happened, and Chris Garrett, a Kavanaugh friend who Ms. Blasey Ford says is the person who introduced her to Judge Kavanaugh.

After Kavanaugh and Ford testified in front of the committee last week, Keyser wrote a letter to the committee dated September 29 that said she did not refute Ford's claims, but "is unable to corroborate it because she has no recollection of the incident in question", according to CNN.

"I was subjected to wrongful and sometimes vicious allegations", he wrote.

With Republicans holding a slim 51-49 majority in the Senate, the loss of any two of their senators would doom Kavanaugh.

The protesters include a loud contingent from ME, and they're calling on Susan Collins, a key Republican senator, to vote against Kavanaugh.

The Senate Judiciary Committee, along with the White House received the FBI's supplemental background investigation into Kavanaugh on Wednesday.

"Nobody is supposed to be guilty until proven innocent in the United States of America", McConnell said on Capitol Hill on Thursday talking about Kavanaugh, while blasting Democrats. "It appears that the White House completely circumscribed the investigation to try to make it meaningless and they succeeded".

Her testimony and the accusations of the other women have turned the Kavanaugh battle into the latest chapter in the #MeToo movement against sexual harassment and assault.

McConnell emphasized that Kavanaugh is "innocent until proven guilty" and must be confirmed since the Federal Bureau of Investigation probe found no corroboration of the sexual assault claim by Dr. Christine Blasey Ford.

"It looks to be a product of an incomplete investigation that was limited perhaps by the White House, I don't know", Feinstein told reporters. "From their own public statements, we knew that to be false, and nothing in this report changes that".

"We saw a man who was under some pressure, I'm not disputing that, but the way he behaved was not the kind of temperament we expect from our judges", said Don Smith, an associate professor of law the University of Denver. Flake, a retiring senator and frequent thorn in the side of President Donald Trump, achieved a delay long enough for the FBI to reopen its background investigation of the nominee.

They include three people Blasey Ford says were in the house at the time of the party. Senators were allowed to read it behind closed doors in a secure location in the Capitol, without taking notes or making copies.

The judge has vehemently denied all allegations against him. However, the calendars he presented during his testimony showed that Kavanaugh had scheduled gatherings strikingly similar to the one Ford described. He said the interview with Mr. Judge, for example, lasted about three hours.

"I feel pretty good about where we are", added Senator John Thune, a member of Senate Republican leadership.
