Canada PM says won't be rushed on NAFTA, new deal not guaranteed

US-Canada deal in doubt; focus shifts to Japan trade talks

Trump quashed any hopes of that in his press conference Wednesday and it appears Canada is unlikely to join the new trade accord between the US and Mexico by the American-imposed October 1 deadline.

He has also repeatedly threatened to walk away from the talks rather than sign on to a deal which would be bad for Canada. He said the U.S.is "very unhappy with the negotiations and the negotiating style of Canada".

The U.S. has said it will sign a deal with Mexico by the end of November, with or without Canada.

Trump went on to criticize Canadian officials and how they have negotiated during the recent NAFTA talks. The president says it would be called USM, for the U.S. and Mexico, instead of USMC.

Lighthizer said the US wants to see the three-way pact stay intact and remains committed to keeping Canada in the deal now or to let it join later.

When asked whether the House of Commons' recent declaration of the treatment of Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar as genocide bolsters the call to have Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi's honorary Canadian citizenship revoked, Trudeau said it's something MPs could debate.

The attack cast further doubt on the future of the three-nation North American Free Trade Agreement, which underpins $1.2tn in annual trade between Canada, Mexico and the United States.

Trump is threatening to impose tariffs on Canadian autos.

"Canada's not making concessions in areas we think are essential", Lighthizer continued.

"The fact is, Canada is not making concessions in areas where we think they're essential", he said at the Concordia Summit in NY.

"I must be honest with you, we're not getting along with their negotiators".

Freeland said that the updated deadline for an agreement will be when a "good deal" for Canada has been reached. "On the other hand, there are things where basically we are just not prepared to give into because it would really render the agreement meaningless".

Lighthizer is expected to submit text Friday that leaves Canada out of the agreement, Bloomberg reported Wednesday. Supporters of Mexico's incoming government, which takes office December 1, are not especially fond of NAFTA, which is why both countries want the deal done before then.

Trudeau said the deal between the US and Mexico raises the "possibility" of Canada signing on, but that he's standing up for Canadian interests in negotiations. "Canada will come along".

Trump has said "a few times" that a new deal would mitigate the tariff issue, Trudeau said. "They know exactly what it is that we are prepared to do and what we need", he said.

"We will not surrender, certainly not", he also said to the american Chamber of commerce, pointing out that Ottawa was a business partner is crucial for the United States.
