Brett Kavanaugh: Looking ahead to what's next for the Supreme Court nominee

COMING OUT SWINGING Supreme court nominee Brett Kavanaugh is sworn in to testify before the Senate Judiciary Committee on Capitol Hill yesterday

In a statement, Mr Trump said: "I've ordered the FBI to conduct a supplemental investigation to update Judge Kavanaugh's file".

"We can confirm the FBI has reached out to interview Ms. Ramirez and she has agreed to cooperate with their investigation", Boulder attorney John Clune said on Twitter.

Trump's order and the decision to put off a final vote came after a key Republican senator, Jeff Flake, threatened to break ranks with his party because of the clouds hanging over Kavanaugh.

Judge, the high school friend of Kavanaugh who Ford says was in the room during the alleged assault, has also agreed to cooperate with the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Kavanaugh is the second judge to be nominated by Trump on the nine-member US Supreme Court.

An FBI spokeswoman did not immediately respond to questions about the investigation, including how many agents would be assigned and whether it could be completed in a week.

"I can not imagine that for the next 50 years they will have to have someone in the Supreme Court who has been accused of violating a young girl".

"There is simply no reason to deny Judge Kavanaugh on the Supreme Court on the basis of evidence presented to us", Grassley said. He has repeatedly denied the allegations.

Investigators compile information about a nominee's past and provide findings to the agency that requested the background check; in this case, it's the White House.

And it staves off the potentially catastrophic political optics of the move to "plow right through", in the words of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, the process of giving Kavanaugh a lifetime appointment on the nation's highest court in a manner that appeared in no way to be aimed at achieving a just result rather than a political win.

The FBI, which remained on the sidelines during the fierce debate over whether Brett Kavanaugh should be on the Supreme Court, will now play a central role in shaping the outcome of his nomination.

'I am digging my heels in, and I'm hoping that a lot of conservatives are determined to vote Republican, ' Round said. "[Christine Blasey] Ford, Deborah Ramirez and Julie Swetnick, it should also examine the veracity of his testimony before the Judiciary Committee", Sanders wrote.

Flake's proposal was endorsed by GOP Senator Lindsey Graham, a strong Kavanaugh backer who said, "What Jeff is saying makes sense to me".

One of her lawyers, Debra Katz, on Friday said "no artificial limits as to time or scope should be imposed" on the new FBI investigation, United States media reported.

An attorney for Keyser, a friend of Ford's, emphasized that Keyser has no recollection of the party where Ford alleges Kavanaugh assaulted her.

Kavanaugh testified Thursday about allegations made against him, shortly after Christine Blasey Ford testified about an alleged assault by Kavanaugh in 1982 when they were both at high school.

"People need to know that when they take action, when we take action together, when we force our electeds to listen to our stories, that's how we actually change this country ... He heard something that provoked turmoil in him", she said.

But the results could also raise more questions about Kavanaugh, and trigger enough opposition to sink his nomination.

Lawyers for P.J. Smyth and Leland Ingham Keyser, two others who Ford said were in the house when she was attacked, have said their clients are willing to cooperate "fully" with the FBI's investigation.
