Kavanaugh hearing sets stage for high-stakes lobbying in Senate

The Fox News host Chris Wallace on Thursday said Christine Blasey Ford's testimony on Brett Kavanaugh was

Flake was the swing vote on the Senate Judiciary Committee, which is made up of 11 Republicans and 10 Democrats.

"We make this request because of the ABA's respect for the rule of law and due process under law, " the ABA letter to committee leadership said.

In another statement, Patrick J. Smyth, identified by Ford as being among those downstairs at the party, says "I have no knowledge of the party in question; nor do I have any knowledge of the allegations of improper conduct she has leveled against Brett Kavanaugh'". "This judiciary committee is no longer an independent branch of government", said Vermont Sen.

Nelson, who is not a member of the Judiciary Committee, was not a part of Thursday's hearing and hasn't met face-to-face with Kavanaugh since Trump nominated him for the lifetime position in July.

"I will be a governor who stands up for women, speaks out against sexual abuse and believes survivors who have the courage to share their stories", he said.

The Democratic senators will have free reign to ask questions.

As an often vocal critic of President Donald Trump's and without the pressure of running for re-election, Flake has proved that he has no qualms about breaking with his party.

He cried as he spoke of how the ordeal has wrecked his family.

The confirmation process of 53-year-old Kavanaugh has found itself in jeopardy after allegations of sexual misconduct surfaced against him as a teenager from a number of women.

Ford alleges that Kavanaugh forced himself on her, groped her, and tried to undress her at a party when they were in high school. Some White House officials were not pleased with the questioning from Phoenix prosecutor Rachel Mitchell, saying she did not effectively target the weak spots in Ford's narrative and worrying that the Democrats had seized the moment.

Research on traumatic memories shows us that sounds and feelings can be some of the most persistent memories of traumatic events, more enduring than a conversation or a remark. "I never saw Brett act in the manner Dr. Ford describes". ABC News reports the author might be Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa).

Trump's son, Donald Jr., also tweeted his review: "I love Kavanaugh's tone. Nowhere in any of these six Federal Bureau of Investigation reports. was there a whiff of any issue, any issue at all related to anyway inappropriate sexual behavior".

Former President George W Bush has been advocating for Kavanaugh with wavering senators in recent days, according to a person familiar with Bush's outreach who was not authorized to speak publicly. Tennessee Sen. Lamar Alexander told Roll Call that Republican senators have been told to prepare for procedural votes on Saturday to allow a Monday cloture vote and a Tuesday confirmation vote.

Republicans can advance Kavanaugh's without any support from Democrats, but given their 51-49 seat majority in the chamber, Kavanaugh's supporters can only lose one vote and still advance his nomination.

It said that the nomination itself has become a referendum on #MeToo - and that confirming Kavanaugh would send the wrong message.

"His testimony was powerful, honest, and riveting", Trump said.

Senior Fellow at the Cato Institute, Ilya Shapiro, says it is unclear if anyone came out ahead after Thursday's testimony. Kavanaugh, testifying second, forcefully denied the accusation.

America is a leading Catholic Jesuit magazine that has been published weekly since 1909.

Kavanaugh went to Georgetown Preparatory School, a Jesuit institution.
