Amazon is reportedly launching an Alexa-enabled subwoofer, microwave, and much more

Amazon plans to release at least 8 new Alexa devices, including a microwave oven and in-car gadget

An unspecified in-car gadget is also planned.

But the competition likely doesn't scare Amazon-on the contrary, the retail giant wants to have its voice assistant available in as many products as possible.

More so than other virtual assistants including Siri and the Google Assistant, Amazon's Alexa has always been focused on the home. Some of the devices will also have Alexa built in.

The new devices reflect Amazon's ambition to make its Alexa voice technology ubiquitous by focusing on areas where people spend most of their time - at home and in the auto. Audi, one of the popular automobile firms has recently took the wraps off its first ever electric vehicle that supports Amazon Alexa voice commands. This is Amazon preparing to push into all of your home electronics and appliances.

Alexa-enabled amplifiers, receivers and subwoofers are not much of a stretch from the company's existing lineup of smart home speakers. Garmin, too, has an Alexa-compatible dash cam that be used in a auto.

An in-car device would certainly not be new.

It's unclear if the new devices will consist exclusively of collaborations between Amazon and other tech manufacturers, or if all of the devices will be made and sold by Amazon.

But the move signifies Amazon's heavy interest in the connected home. An Alexa-powered microwave oven could possibly allow users to start/stop the microwave, and set cooking times. The company is also working on robots of some kind for the home, per Bloomberg.

Having its own home appliances also opens up a new sales channel for Amazon. Now, Amazon plans to step up the momentum by producing more of its own Alexa-powered devices, according to a report. Sonos, for example, has a similar business model, as it said in its quarterly filing that it relies on "custom installers of home audio systems for a significant portion of our sale".

It previously announced a partnership with home construction company Lennar to include two Echo speakers in new homes and offered at-home visits from Amazon technicians. Amazon's former director of Alexa Smart Home, Charlie Kindel, meanwhile, joined smart home service provider Control 4 in August.

Although there is no confirmation from Amazon, some of these devices could arrive later this month. But it looks like the e-commerce firm is planning to expand its hardware portfolio drastically with as many as eight devices if the latest report by CNBC holds some weight. All of them will be Alexa-enabled, however, some of them will have Alexa inbuilt, says the report.
