WTA chief backs Serena as row grows over US Open sexism

Serena fined $17000 after US Open final outburst

Mother of all meltdowns.

Meanwhile, some Williams supporters have thanked her for highlighting the "unequal playing field" in sports for women.

And as renowned author HL Mencken once proclaimed in explaining Williams' ranting and raving: "Injustice is relatively easy to bear; what stings more is justice". Her grandfather told Japanese newspaper Asahi Shimbun that her Japanese side of the family, who now reside in Hokkaido, gathered in front of the television to watch her play and that he received a call from her after the game.

Serena Williams's coach was cheating.

Naomi Osaka (left) with her sister, Mari, who is a year older.

On the other hand, Naomi Osaka went on to become the first ever tennis player from Japan to lift a grand slam title as she defeated Williams 6-2, 6-4 in the summit showdown at the Arthur Ashe Stadium in NY.

The episode raises two important questions about coaching: should Williams have been penalised for being coached during the match and - more fundamentally - should coaching during a match be an offence in the first place? "It's a Grand Slam final!"

But the most regrettable result of the traumatic occasion that will now forever be tarnished with notoriety, is that Osaka's masterly display will be underscored, with attention heaped on the villain of the piece instead of the hero!

The WTA has backed up Williams' claim of sexism in the way she was treated by Ramos during the US Open final.

Djokovic noted that it was an "awkward situation" for both competitors and "tough" for the umpire. I will be sure to use it when I write about how Black women are treated and characterised for speaking up for themselves.

After serving out the match, Osaka showed her softer side, bursting into tears as boos rang out from fans still outraged over her opponent's bust-up with Ramos. As Osaka said in a post-match interview, "When I step on the court, I feel like a different person, right".

Serena Williams of the U.S. speaks at a news conference after competing in the U.S. Open women's singles final against Naomi Osaka of Japan at Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York, Sept. 8, 2018.

But Djokovic said he did not see things in the same way as WTA chief Simon, adding: "I don't understand from where he's coming with that statement".

Williams will be fined $4,000 for a coaching violation, $3,000 for smashing her racquet, and $10,000 for verbal abuse towards the umpire. Toshihisa Tsuchihashi, a director of the Japan Tennis Association and general manager of the association's High Performance Department, commented, "There's nothing that would make me happier than for an athlete aiming to reach the pinnacle of a tour to go on to win a gold medal".

While Williams denied receiving any coaching despite her coach Patrick Mouratoglou's admission he had attempted to give her guidance, Simon said it was an area that needed to be looked at.

Osaka became her country's first Grand Slam victor, while compatriot Kei Nishikori also performed strongly with a run to the men's semi-finals. Moratoglou later admitted that he had indeed been coaching but said that Osaka's coach had doing the same.
