4 dead, 5 injured in shooting at Cincinnati bank

Police Respond to Active Shooter Situation in Downtown Cincinnati

New security footage shows a gunman who killed three people in a downtown Cincinnati office high-rise firing randomly while carrying a briefcase with hundreds of rounds of ammunition.

According to Cincinnati Police, around 9am an active shooter incident was called in at the Fifth Third Bank at 511 Walnut Street at Fountain Square downtown. The first four police officers to arrive at the bank spotted Perez raining gunfire in the lobby - and quickly engaged him, Isaac told reporters.

One died at the scene.

Hamilton County Prosecutor Joe Deters said the rapid police response probably prevented many more casualties.

Police earlier characterized the incident as an "active shooter/officer involved shooting incident" in a tweet, but did not elaborate. Cincinnati Police Chief Eliot Isaac said investigators have not established a motive, but they are confident Perez acted alone.

Multiple people had been transported to an area hospital but there was no word on their conditions.

Police made no mention of any search for a possible second attacker, but warned that the area would remain on lockdown as the scene was investigating.

According to FOX19, at least two people are dead and the shooter is in custody.

A woman named Ibony Ginyard, who was working in a Dunkin' Donuts in the building's lobby at the time of the attack, said she and the other employees ducked behind the counter as they heard at least five or six gunshots. "After that, I started running", Richardson said.

"I was walking past the Chipotle and I had my headphones in when some woman stopped me and said 'You don't want to go to the square, we just heard gun shots, ' " he says.

The Enquirer said some customers were hiding inside a bathroom at the bank, and that one gunshot victim was found inside a nearby ice cream shop.

Police officers and ambulances rushed to the scene at the Fifth Third Center, a 30-story building in the heart of downtown, during the morning rush.

Bank manager Greg Harshfield told CNN affiliate WXIX that he could hear the shooting unfold from an upper floor of the building.

The responding officers hit Perez several times, killing him, Isaac said.

Sammarco posted Wednesday on Facebook, asking how officials will explain to his parents "they will never see their son again because of a senseless shooting in a foreign country". The bank building was locked down for most of the morning, and surrounding streets and sidewalks were closed off.

Jessica Hanson, who works on one of the lower floors, said a co-worker had taken the elevator down to get a drink, and when the doors opened, she almost stepped on a man's body.

Fifth Third, which operates 1,200 banking centers across several states, in a statement offered its "thoughts and prayers" for everyone "caught up in this awful event".
