Melania Trump's parents become US citizens under rules her husband

Amalija and Viktor Knavs parents of First Lady Melania Trump arrive with their lawyer Michael Wildes at U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services at the Jacob K. Javits Federal Building

Viktor and Amalija Knavs, the parents of first lady Melania Trump, were granted US citizenship on Thursday through a process President Trump wants to eliminate.

First lady Melania Trump's parents, Viktor and Amalija Knavs, were sworn in as United States citizens on Thursday.

"Once they had the green card, they then applied for citizenship when they were eligible", the couple's lawyer Michael Wildes was quoted as saying by The New York Times. And yet, here are his wife's parents, gladly getting the USA citizenship that their son-in-law wants to virtually bring to an end within the next couple of years.

Asked about President Trump's heavy rebuke of family-based migration, Wildes said: "I can't comment on the President's politics when it comes to my clients but I have stood up against the President's immigration policies personally".

The Knavses came and went from the ceremony at a Manhattan federal building flanked by Homeland Security police.

"These doors that are in America remain hinged open to handsome people as they have today", Wildes said, adding, "We just thank everybody for their attention to this very important dialogue that we're having on immigration".

Writing on Twitter in November, Trump made his views on the system clear.

The Knavses are from Slovenia, but now divide their time between New York City, Palm Beach, and Washington, D.C., where they stay with the Trumps in the White House.

It is not clear when the Knavs couple obtained their green cards, though their status as permanent residents was first revealed by Wildes in February.

The Republican president argues that the system steals jobs from Americans and threatens national security, calling for a merit-based system that preferences more educated, English-speaking professionals.

Their lawyer said that the couple had met the five-year requirement, but added, "I can't give further comment".

According to news reports, she entered the country in 2001 on a so-called Einstein visa for "individuals of extraordinary ability" as a model.

It's unclear when they obtained their green cards, but usually, permanent residents have to hold green cards for five years before applying for citizenship.

She settled in NY in 1996 and met Mr Trump two years later.

The USCIS district director Thomas Cioppa presided over the ceremony, Wildes said.

The Knavses, both in their 70s, raised Melania Trump in Sevnica, a Slovenian town of around 4,500 people. Viktor, 74, was a vehicle dealer while Amalija, 73, worked in a textile factory. But cracking down on individuals who entered the United States without a visa has not been his only priority; he's also made it even more hard for immigrants to come to the country legally.
