As tensions continue to build between Canada and Saudi Arabia over the release of detained civil rights activists, the kingdom has announced it has ended all medical treatment programs in Canada.

The national Saudi Arabian airline, Saudia, said this week that it would suspend all flights between the country and Canada, starting next week.

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is reportedly selling off its assets in Canada and will stop buying Canadian wheat and barley, in the latest escalation in the sudden diplomatic dispute between the two countries. Spokesman of the Egyptian Foreign Ministry Ambassador Ahmed Abu Zeid said in a press statement that his country stands firm in support of the stability and sovereignty of Arab countries, stressing the necessity of complying with the global norms and conventions governing relations between countries and respecting their sovereignty. "A mistake has been made and a mistake should be corrected", Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir told a news conference in Riyadh. On Tuesday, Minister of Education Dr. Ahmed Al-Eissa assured Saudi scholarship students in Canada that the Kingdom has worked to provide all facilities for an easy transfer to universities in other countries.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau showed no signs of ceding to Saudi Arabia Wednesday, saying the federal government has, and will continue to "speak strongly and clearly in private and in public on questions of human rights".

The Canadian government has not responded in kind. The selloff began on Tuesday, the Financial Times reported, and involved about $100 billion in Saudi funds.

Jubeir added that Saudi Arabia was "considering additional measures" against Canada, without elaborating.

"Saudi Arabia does not interfere in the affairs of Canada in any way".

Riyadh has recently faced criticism of its human rights record, as the United States and European Union said they were seeking details about the arrest of women's rights activists in the kingdom.
