Sen. Orrin Hatch throws colorful terms at Democrats oppose Supreme Court nominee

"In the end, the committee will have reviewed significantly more records than ever before for a Supreme Court nominee", Foy said.

The Iowa Republican had said Wednesday that he will hold a confirmation hearing in September with the goal of a floor vote by October 1.

Any delay could mean that Kavanaugh, if ultimately approved by the Republican-led Senate, could still miss the October 1 start of the Supreme Court's term and that the final confirmation vote could take place close to the November 6 USA congressional elections. He said he could not reach an agreement with Feinstein over the scope of the documents request.

Some Republicans had hoped the proceedings would begin in August - normally a vacation month for the Senate - but Democrats have slowed the process.

The GOP statement said the committee was counting on receiving documents "in an even more rapid fashion" from the archives of the George W. Bush Presidential Library.

"It seems to me like early September would be the earliest" for hearings in the Senate Judiciary Committee, the panel's chairman Chuck Grassley told the Hugh Hewitt Show.

A delay in the confirmation process would give Democrats more time to hammer Kavanaugh, a conservative jurist they fear could swing the high court to the right for decades and imperil landmark cases like Roe v. Wade.

Republicans say Democrats are seeking to review what could be as many as 900,000 pages on Kavanaugh from his tenure in the George W. Bush administration as an associate White House counsel as a stall tactic. Committee Democrats did not sign on to the letter, and then sent their own request July 31 asking for records for Kavanaugh's work as staff secretary.

"The fact of the matter is that Judge Kavanaugh is going to sit on the United States Supreme Court when we're through", Hatch added. The aide noted that a separate document review being conducted by a group of Bush lawyers had already given 125,000 documents relating to Kavanaugh's record to the committee on Thursday.

Democrats say the documents they are requesting, including the staff secretary papers, are crucial to understanding all aspects Kavanaugh's background, particular his role in forming policy under Bush. According to Stern's letter, it simply would not be realistic for the Archives to compile and submit all of the necessary documentation in such an abbreviated period of time.

"I have told my caucus that I'm waiting, and I think majority are following me", Schumer told The New York Times last month. "I'm exhausted of partisanship, and frankly, we didn't treat their candidates for these positions the way they're treating ours". "To be clear, President Bush has offered this as a courtesy to the Committee to assist in a timely assessment of Judge Kavanaugh's nomination".
