Hottest day of the year 2018

Conditions are expected to get even hotter on Friday as warm air from Europe continues to engulf the United Kingdom, putting the all-time temperature record, 38.5C, under threat.

On Thursday the EuroTunnel Le Shuttle operation warned passengers heading for the Continent at its Folkestone terminal to expect four-hour delays to booked times, blaming restricted shuttle capacity.

The amber warning is issued when threshold temperatures for one or more regions have been reached for one day and then the following night, with the forecast for the next day indicates a 90 percent chance of the threshold being met.

"If you're looking for somewhere to escape the heat, western and northern areas will have pleasantly warm mid 20s Celsius, although across Northern Ireland and western Scotland this may be accompanied by occasionally cloudy skies".

Cavendish, in Suffolk, was the hotspot on Tuesday with the temperature reaching 31.4C (88.5F).

The current record stands at 38.5C which was recorded at Faversham in Kent on August 10 2003.

The Met Office says that hot weather often brings the risk of showers and thunderstorms and there is a chance of a few of these breaking out over East Anglia, south-east and perhaps central England on Thursday evening.

Where these take place, torrential downpours with a much as 30 mm of rainfall in 1 hour and 60 mm in 3 hours could occur.

"Large hail and strong, gusty winds will be additional hazards".

Earlier this week the Met Office issued an alert advising people to stay indoors or in the shade during the middle of the day during the heatwave.

Britain's heatwave has turned green grass brown, triggered an impending hose pipe ban in the northwest of England and prompted a warning for people to keep out of the sun. The Heat Health Watch Service is created to help healthcare professionals manage through periods of extreme temperature.

Steve Jordan, of the Eastbourne Hospitality Association in East Sussex, said: "We've had long hot summers in the past and I don't remember warnings telling us not to go out in the sunshine".

The warning is one below a national emergency, because of prolonged high temperatures in the South East.
