USA announces $12 bn in aid to farmers hurt by trade tariffs

'Making America 1929 Again': GOP Sen. Sasse Rips Trump on Tariffs, Planned Farmer 'Bailout'

The visit comes after Trump imposed tariffs on European Union steel and aluminium, prompting a retaliation on USA products, such as whisky and motorcycles.

Soybean prices - in the face of trade fears with China - have hovered around historic lows for months, leading Republican lawmakers in red states to raise red flags about the impact these tariffs could have on Trump country.

"This is only a short-term solution", said Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue, and is meant to give Trump time to rebalance trade rules worldwide.

A "trade promotion program" will work to find new markets for US agricultural products.

White House officials contend the tariffs inflict some necessary minor, domestic short-term pain in order to achieve long-term large gains for the US economy. "This announcement is substantial but we can not overstate the dire consequences that farmers and ranchers are facing in relation to lost export markets". The USDA will purchase food for donation to charity to help fruit, nut, rice, legume, beef, pork, and milk producers.

The third prong of the plan is to help farm groups develop new export markets.

It's unclear what number Trump was referring to.

The United States is engaged in an escalating tit-for-tat tariff exchange with China.

The European leaders have warned they're ready to put tariffs on $20 billion of American goods if Trump puts the duties on auto imports. But those tariffs covered about $3 billion in goods and would pale in comparison with possible 25 percent tariffs on imports of cars, trucks and auto parts.

"This trade war is cutting the legs out from under farmers and White House's "plan" is to spend $12 billion on gold crutches", Sen.

"Tariffs are the greatest!". Trump wrote on Twitter on July 24. It's as simple as that - and everybody's talking!

It followed earlier tweets saying "Tariffs are the greatest!" and claiming the USA had been "the piggy bank that's being robbed". "All will be Great!"

But more voices even in Mr Trump's own Republican Party are coming out against his confrontational stance.

In attempting to patch things up with farmers hurt by the trade war he initiated, President Trump managed to anger both from farm-state Republicans who say their constituents would rather sell their crops than collect a government subsidy - and representatives of non-farm states saying, "How about us?" Not any longer folks.

Schreurs said the economics of the issue make it hard to solve. Other countries "don't want to have those tariffs put on them".

Oettinger suggested the European Union and the United States could try to negotiate a lighter version of a stalled comprehensive U.S.

While the United States claims the retaliation is "illegal", the Trump administration recognised that it is doing damage to American farmers.

"There may be some scope for Australian producers to pick up some of that [soybean] demand, on the other hand you've got American exports that were previously going to China that are likely being diverted to other markets as well", he said. "Just be a little patient".

While he opposes tariffs and would prefer the administration use "better tools" to address unfair trade practices, Republican House Speaker Paul Ryan said the confrontation could produce beneficial results. Sign up for payments probably will begin around Labor Day. Trump had asked Perdue to explore options months ago, and more details are still to be released.

"However, our concerns still lie in a lengthy trade war that will cause long-term, irreparable harm to US agriculture", the statement reads.

Farmers already have "quite a few" assistance programs, he said.

The administration said it would provide up to $12 billion in short-term federal aid. The USDA will instead draw on funds from the Commodity Credit Corporation. Lost $817 Billion on Trade a year ago.
